First Time Glasses Wearer

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

I’ve always had really good eyesight, but always had regular Optician checks because we have Glaucoma in our family. Last time I went I was really surprised when the Optician said I need to wear glasses. Apparently I’m a little short sighted, which means I can still read without prescription glasses but I can’t see clearly for TV or driving.

My sister always buys her glasses from an online optician, so she helped me to order a pair. That was the easy bit – my challenge was getting used to being a spectacle wearer! I got some really cool thin metal spectacle frames.

The first time I went outside in my new glasses really was an eye opener! The hedgerows suddenly looked three dimensional, and I realised how fuzzy things had become for me. I’m not squinting to focus on road signs anymore, and I’m not tired at the end of work. I guess my eyes just don’t feel strained anymore

Everyone has been really positive about my new look, and now I can’t wait for my next pair to arrive! I ordered them yesterday and they should be here within the week. This pair are hot red plastic with a touch of bling! This will give me a chic geek look for work and a funky pair for going out. Now I just need to think up some other excuses for buying more!!

What kind of a shopper are you?

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I, like most British people, am addicted to online shopping! With the recent proliferation of incredible online discount stores, ‘on-line only’ merchandise, deals with free shipping and even on-line glasses sales, who can help not be? And that is why I have recently begun even buying my eyeglasses online.

I have found countless pairs of gorgeous designer frames for anywhere from sixty to ninety percent off of high street prices! And although it may be a little dorky of me, it is so fun to get packages in the mail. It is like you are getting a little present! I especially love it because sometimes they throw in little perfume samples.

Which brings me to the second type of shopper. The type of buyer who prefers to shop on the high street. Even if money was no object, I would still be an online shopper. Personally,  it’s just so much easier than crowded streets and shops. If I could just buy a pair of eyeglasses and walk out again, that would be one thing but I never come home with what I had originally wanted. This is why I’ve turned to buying my glasses online, the suprise and the fantasy are half the fun. And of course, you can try the glasses on by having them sent to you for a free home trial !!

My New Glasses – Wow!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’m really excited with the new prescription glasses I got this week, the world is a different place!! I’ve worn glasses for ten years, and I’ve gradually got braver with the design of my eyeglass frames since the first pair.

When I first needed prescription spectacles I started out with rimless frames because I thought they were more inconspicuous, but I kept putting them down and breaking them. I moved onto metal designer frames, but then I discovered my online optician and decided to get something exciting, and buy glasses online. So I got my new Christian Dior frames – when the Postman arrived with them I was desperate to get the box open!

They are a beautiful blueberry coloured plastic with fabulous sparkles in the side arms, everyone has commented on how gorgeous they are. I don’t wear much jewellery and I feel I don’t need to now, my glasses do all the work for me! My girlfriends all want to know where I got them.

The good news is that not only can I see, but this little slice of Designer heaven was way cheaper than buying a Dior handbag. I love them and I can’t imagine going back to boring old glasses.

If anyone out there is nervous of trying something different then take it from me – boys do make passes if you have the right glasses! (But that’s another story!!)

Are high end designer glasses worth the cost?

Friday, March 13th, 2009

The fancy boutiques. The perfumed air and the gorgeous full color ads on the wall of with thin, large eyed waifs in incredibly tailored clothing and gorgeous scenery. What could be better than shopping the high end stores? Luxury and fantasy mix and sell you not just a pretty pair of eyeglasses or a functional handbag, but a little oomph in your wardrobe, a secret happiness, a little reflection of yourself!

When they are successful, Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and their cohorts are able to carry me away to a different place; a better, lovelier world. Now, this is not always the case with every designer and every collection. But once in awhile, you find that pair of glasses that you could not love more had you designed it in your dreams.

I have seen cute pairs of non-designer eyewear that I liked just fine and that I thought were cute. But there is that special something that designer eyewear can offer. Like when you find that pair that fits your face like a dream in gorgeous peaches and cream tones! And the couple pairs I own seem to last forever! That is why when I come across a designer pair I really love, I get it, or wait for it to go on sale on the internet to buy them. If they are just the right pair, they give me an extra sense of spunk, fun, and even confidence when I look in the mirror.

Celebrity Eyewear

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Celebrities are always the people to watch to spot up and coming trends. So far this year, Britney Spears has been seen in a pair of Chanel sunglasses with gold lattice detail on the side. The lenses wrap around the sides of the face.

Kate Winslet has been seen in thick black Bvlgari frames with a fantastic high gloss. The arms of hers are decorated with a silver square motif logo design that is accented by over ninety Swarovski crystals.

Victoria Beckham has a favorite pair of Dolce and Gabbana glasses, while Liz Hurley prefers her Gucci aviators. Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, and Nicole Richie have all been spotted wearing a fantastic pair of oversized Dolce and Gabbana glasses. They are still slightly bug-eyed shape but are more squarish and very cool. Madonna seems to mostly be wearing Christian Dior.
We have been noticing, however, a very interesting trend that we are curiously watchincg Amanda Peet, Kate Blanchett, Chloe Sevigny, Jennifer Garner, Kirsten Dunst and Lindsay Lohan have all been spotted out in public wearing eyeglasses, and looking fresh and fabulous!

I think it is a great look, adding personality and a little kick to their style, and I hope this trend grows and continues. Each of these women had on designer frames that were unique from one another and very flattering. Chloe Sevigny had on a heavier fifties inspired pair while Cate Blanchett sported a sleek bright blue pair. I love the sophistication and geek chic of this new look!

Do Glasses ( Spectacles) Make You Look Smarter?

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Do glasses or spectacles make you look smarter? Most people think so. Do glasses actually make a person smarter? Of course not. The idea most likely derived from school children and their fondness of stereotyping. Remember the children that always seemed to excel academically? The ones that other children referred to as “the nerds”? Most often they wore large horn rimmed, black glasses. More often than not their spectacles sported some sort of white tape on the nose peice. These guys may have been so called “nerds” but they certainly were smart, and it seems that the glasses they wore became a trademark for intelligence.

If you want to make the impression of intelligence with your glasses there are certainly some beautiful alternatives to those ugly, horn rimmed glasses from back in the day. You can choose from all different sizes and colors. One of my personal favorites are the lightweight little red spectacles. They combine the essence of intelligence with just right the hint of flirtation.

You don’t even have to have a vision problem to sport around a stylish pair of glasses. Non prescription spectacles can be worn as part of your everyday wardrobe. You may even want to choose several pairs. A pair to match each your own unique moods.

Shop around and check out all of the different choices. There are so many fun styles to choose from that you may have a hard time deciding. Just have fun with your options and remember that little pair of glasses sitting on your nose is not only a fashion statement, but most likely makes someone think you are a walking mass of intelligence.

Chic eyewear – why not?

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

When I was growing up, my mother always took me to good old Boots when I needed to get a new prescription and set of eyeglasses. And while the optometrist appointment itself was cheap at Boots, the glasses frames were always a hundred pounds still. And of course, every pair I got back in the nineties was incredibly geeky. I have grown up and stuck in the groove of what I am used to. I still go to Boots to get my glasses. They have gotten many more cute styles, but in my mind, glasses are still incredibly dorky, and so I avoid wearing them at all costs!

So when my friend came to work the other day with the most gorgeous pair of Chloe spectacles, it blew my mind! They were absolutely gorgeous in shades of plum and wine. They were modern and feminine and absolutely chic! I thought she must have paid way more than I would ever even consider paying, but then she told me there are countless online stores where you can get the frames for amazing prices.

So I looked online, and one site, theinternetglassescompany.co.uk had an amazing selection! Dior, Gucci and , Marc Jacobs. I did not know that Alexander McQueen was now designing eyeglasses, too! I have seen the promised land and I am not ever going back to Boots!

A few tips for buying eyeglasses online

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Online eye-glasses stores are amazing because you are able to find so much more of a variety of frame styles, as well as other colors that actual stores do not always carry. The obvious downside to shopping for your glasses online is that you cannot try them on.

I have found a couple of tips that make online shopping for eyeglasses not only feasible, but easy! The best tactic is to first go to an actual glasses store where you can try different frames on. When you find a pair that you think flatters your face most, there are a few things to find out about them. Find out the length of the eye, bridge, and temple, which will help you know if the pair online you want will fit.

This all does involve a little extra effort, but it can be very worthwhile because there are such incredible deals online! I have found that I can get the same frames I wanted online for as little as half of what the actual store price was. Which of course, helps me justify getting more than one pair! I normally get a second pair that is colorful and more funky, just because a plain pair gets boring day after day! If worse comes to worse and the frames you bought online just look absolutely terrible when you put them on, most online eyeglass stores offer refunds. Just be sure that store that you order from does accept refunds before you order.

2009 eyewear trends!

Monday, March 9th, 2009

This year, there is a ton of emphasis on big and colorful accessories, and eyewear is no exception! Ray Ban Wayfarers are everywhere in all different bright colors and neons. Eyewear frames are now coming out in colors that we have not seen in a long time; vibrant peacock blues, raspberry and purple, and other jewel tones. They are great to add a dimension of funkiness and uniqueness to you look.

One particular style that is just becoming really trendy is the Persol 714. The Persol company started in the early part of the 1900′s and was actually designed for for pilots and sports drivers. These glasses actually fold up and can be carried in your pocket! However, they gained popularity within the popular culture after the 1972 movie ‘the Getaway’ with Steve McQueen. They were seen on the recent James Bond movie, ‘Casino Royale,’ and celebrities such as Zac Efron and Elle MacPherson have recently been seen wearing them.

As we get farther into the year, we will see more and more big, thick frames! And we do not mean the 1970′s bug-eye frames that have been so trendy for the last several years. We are talking about 1950’s square, thick plastic frames. We have seen several pairs by Gucci and Christian Dior that have a fabulous cat-eye shape. Just like grandma Vera used to wear! The ornamentation of tiny rhinestones and crystals is also coming back giving this season a very ‘Viva Las Vegas!’ style.

Glasses are not for Geeks!

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

When children are told they need glasses, they worry they will get made fun of. They can already hear the words geek and nerd coming from the mouths of school bullies. We’ve seen these types of scenes time and again on television and in the movies.

Then people grow up and realize there is no better accessory than a great pair of glasses.

For one, glasses make you look sophisticated. The perception is that glasses exude a sense of responsibilty and intelligence. Who wouldn’t want those qualities? Wearing frames can be especially valuable on a job interview for the same reasons.

They also allow you to express who you are. These days glasses are like people: they come in all different shapes and sizes. You have plenty to pick from and its an opportunity to show off your sense of style. Bold personalities may enjoy bright colors and patterns. People with an especially active lifestyle may choose plastic frames. There is even the opportunity to get a “barely there” look with frames that blend right in with the lense. You can even take it day by day, and match your glasses to your outfit.

If you’re wanting a fresh look or if you haven’t changed frames in the last five years, get an eyeware makeover today!
