Celeb Watch July 2010

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

A proper English Summer Celeb watchers, what a fabulous fashion opportunity. At last we can bask in our Melissa Odabash swimmies without a cardie on top! Forget St Barts, with this weather Clacton might just be the new Caribbean. We never thought we’d leave Glasto with less mud than we arrived with! Talking of which, festival chic is the perfect barometer for fashion for the rest of the summer, so what did we spy, in between swooning our latest girl crush, Kylie the new Aphrodite….

Kate Moss – Finally giving the Wayfarers a rest and stepping out in the cutest Aviator to match her boy crush Jamie Hince. Sweet! Killer on the cheekbones Kate, a great look.

Alexa Chung – Cool once more, in a divine take on the Wayfarer look, a deep plastic that complimented her elfin face shape perfectly.

Sienna Miller – A beach babe Aviator shape that looked chilled and laid back with her unstructured hair and that ever present ghost of boho vibe.

Kylie – Our fave babe weighed down by this season’s biggest sunnie so far, an Eighties homage with huge dark lenses, nicely balanced with skinny rims and sides. Why just kiss Ana Matronic Kylie? We were waiting……..

Festival season wore us out Darlings, so now it’s time to chill with the left over Wimbledon Pimms before we head off to the beach. Check the packing – Stella McCartney clutch full of Aviators, Chanel Coco lippy, Gucci cuff, Jimmy Choos – see how exhausting the last couple of weeks have been…..

Celeb Watch Hello June 2010

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

It’s jumping June Celeb Watchers! Time to gear up for festivals, Pimms, suntans and maxi-dresses for all occasions. (What a wonderful invention – we may never wax our legs again!) While we wallow in SATC 2 fever and dribble into our popcorn over Aiden and Mr Big – that SJP is one lucky lucky girl, we somehow have to find time to keep an eye on those Celebs for you……

Victoria Beckham – Ok, we’ll never get over our crush on VB, the ultimate icon for die-hard shoppers, so we may be biased, but we’re loving her huge shades with a cool graduated tint.

Kate Winslet – We do admire her spunky British style, but in the way of British style it’s sometimes a little off kilter – take a leaf from VB’s book, Kate, and graduate with honours! The one colour tint is so last year – but nice big square sunnies, top marks for a shape that suits you.

Lady GaGa – Lady G, if we’ve got a crush on Mrs Beckham then it’s true love for you, you never disappoint! It’s hard to concentrate on the eye wear what with the fishnets, crazy hats and big pants, but she’s been rocking a huge Aviator shield. Very feminine on her petite face.

Khloe Kardashian – Taking a leaf our of VB’s book, in a cool and vastly oversized plastic with a graduated tint. Nice brown to honey shading, beautiful against her skin.

So thanks for the inspiration girls, we’re off to shop – check list for festival – Prada silk pumps, tiny shorts, baby wipes, at least six pairs of sunnies, fishnets and telephone hat – high maintenance? Moi?

Celeb Watch for the New Government 2010!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Greetings Celeb watchers, hope you’re all fluffing up those pussy cat bows and chic court shoes now we’re all grown up, posh and Tory for summer. A new PM, more importantly a new PM’s wife to keep an eye on, and sunshine on the way. What more could we want? Some new stuff of course, so who are we watching this week?

Sarah Jessica Parker – can we wait any longer for SATC 2? Hurry back Mr Big! SJP rocking a funky look in a very cool huge shield sunnie. Always ahead of a trend SJP, Carrie would be proud!

Julia Roberts – Adorable twins – check. Huge beaming smile – check. Tres chic and always on trend gold metal Aviator – check. What’s not to like?! Always stay sunny Julia!

Halle Berry – knock out bod and legs to die for, but what’s this – are mirror shades back in fashion? They actually look pretty amazing on the luscious Ms Berry, but then what wouldn’t?

Sandra Bullock – The Rom-com Queen looking a bit of a fashion Princess in a fabulous graduated tint that sets off her killer cheekbones. Sandra has quietly stunning looks and she pulls off this severe style with no problem.

N.B. note to Cheryl Cole, glad to see you’re out and about having fun, but please have a chat with Will.i.am about those blue and yellow diving mask specs he’s wearing. When Hugh Grant wore them to the cinema in Notting Hill that was funny, but the joke’s as old and grey as Hugh now…..

Celeb Watch May Day 2010

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The temperature has been rising Celeb watchers, (and not just when we saw those shots of Matt Smith with his shirt off!) Spring is well and truly underway and our thoughts turn to festival season and summer hols. The ash cloud has vanished into thin air, flights are flying, and we’re getting geared up for summer…….what are you waiting for Celeb fans? Get star spotting then get shopping……

Kate Bosworth – the coolest hippie chick ever, check out the Californian sun bleached blonde locks, toning effortlessly with a chic and shiny gold metal Aviator.

Kate Bosworth in Gold Aviators

Kelly Osbourne – rocking a Fifties vibe, in cute retro round eyes, the smallest sunnie we’ve seen this season. Go set those trends Kelly!

Matt Smith – you lucky lucky girl Daisy Lowe, snagging the hottest young Doctor in town. Matt’s going for the Gold Aviator too; an excellent choice to soften chiselled features and look cool. Go Doctor – you can impress us with your sonic screwdriver any time…..

Gwen Stefani – always one to watch. A huge black sunnie, the perfect contrast to her ice blonde hair and alabaster skin. Nice choice of a chopped off shape to flatter her tiny face.

No time to lose Celeb Watchers, gotta hit those shops and get kitted out for steamy nights and sun scorched days. Whose look to channel? Much easier than making a decision on the election – Kelly, Gwen, Kate……..it’s best not to offend and we can go for all three…..

Celeb Watch April 2010

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Summer may finally be on it’s way Celeb Watchers! Even Brad and Angie might be coming into bloom again, along with the nude colour palette, SATC 2, and wedges. How can we stand the excitement?! A little retail therapy might help us to calm down, as always, so many shops, so little time….thank heavens for Net-a-Porter and 24 hour online purchasing, what joy!! So lets get a little Celeb divine inspiration….

Marina Diamandis – glittering even without those delicious backing diamonds, in the ever cool Wayfarer. Black is the only choice with her raven tresses, shine on Marina!

Gerard Butler – did he ditch Jen, or is it the other way round, or where they ever an item or are they now? Jen has more variety in her love life than Victoria Beckham has Birkins! Exhausting! Anyway, Gerard was fooling nobody, hiding behind a fairly chic Aviator with chunky wide sides.

Cheryl Cole – Sizzling and single, stunning in a huge black plastic that accentuates those razor sharp cheekbones. Hope your attitude towards Ashley is just as strong as your look

Madonna – Visiting Malawi with her girls, funky as ever in dark lenses with an uplifting shot of gold across the brow. The material girl was doing her bit for the children of Malawi, good works and good looks Madge!

An exciting week all-in-all, Celeb watchers, and the good news is that with a bit of dedication to fashion we can let the election pass us by in a flurry of crunchy carrier bags and the thrill of the (pur)chase. Although it’s worth noting what Sarah Brown and SamCam are wearing and avoiding it at all costs….

Celeb Watch Early Spring 2010

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

What an exhausting week Celeb fans! Having just recovered from the Baftas and making our must have list of hot designer items, this week we’ve been engrossed in the Oscars! The verdicts are in…..Sandra Bullock, perfection itself…..Dame Helen Millen……simply divine….Too many frocks, so little time….maybe for now we’ll content ourselves with some shades to cover the blood shot fashion hound eyes…..

Gwen Stefani – never gets it wrong! Cool and chic in massive sunnies that are a stylish update on the old Wayfarer. Black looks stunning against her white blonde locks.

Gwen Stefani in massive sunglasses

Victoria Beckham – channelling her inner Audrey Hepburn in a very classy, smoky lens set in a Sixties shaped plastic.

Cheryl Cole – heart broken but gorgeous in an array of sunnies that would put even Victoria to shame!! Our faves were the Aviators, and the teardrop shape is so appropriate this week…

Whitney Port – showing you can do young and edgy by choosing a classic. Looks like the iconic Wayfarer but at Whitney’s age it’s fresh when worn oversized and with this season’s brand new utility trend.

Time to shop then Celeb fans! Go plastic, go huge, go black……and wait for the sunshine to illuminate the star struck!!

Take a Brow!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

You may prefer to wax, thread, pluck or just trim, but as everyone knows eyebrow grooming is a vitally important part of our beauty routine. Perfect brows will frame your face, enhance your eyes, and even give as good a lift to your looks as cosmetic surgery! Once you’ve got the ideal shape – whether that’s dark and bold like Megan Fox or soft and subtle like Carey Mulligan – you then need to pay attention to your specs……

The mainstream look for specs is presently still shallow and fairly low across the top rim. Although high fashion frames are getting bigger the excess shape is all on the lower edges, so even if frames are deeper they are still low. Your specs need to follow and echo the line of your brows, to make them fit in with your facial anatomy. Once the colour and shape of the glasses enhances you, then it doesn’t matter what you wear! The glasses are part of you and will go with anything.

So if you’re choosing new specs, have that hair cut or brow session a week or so before you try any frames, to adjust to that part of your new look. Then the real fun begins! Specs are often the first thing that anyone will notice about you, so spend some time getting it right.

Take a close look at your eyebrows – are they arched, flat, high, low? Are they very fair – do you need a dark top rim on your glasses to give your face some definition and structure? Are they dark? If so, make sure your frame follows their shape perfectly, or the two different lines will look odd together. If your brows are light and you don’t like the shape, re-invent your features by choosing a dark colour, an obvious rim that will give you a new brow line. If you pencil your brows in, pop your specs on as a guide to symmetry and shape. Wonky pencil lines are a bit of a give away! If all else fails, semi-permanent make up eyebrow tattoos are an excellent idea if you got a bit carried away with the tweezers in the past and now need a bit of corrective work!

Celeb Watch Winter’s End 2010

Friday, March 5th, 2010

We’re exhausted this week Celeb watchers, what with drinking in every detail of the fab frocks at the Baftas and trying to keep up with the news on our face Celeb couples. How divine did Kate Winslet look in her slinky black lace panelled gown? How dreamily delicious was Colin Firth in his gracious acceptance speech? (Totally our new crush, even without the Mr Darcy wet shirt) Then we’re having to cope with worrying about Cheryl, and even Vernon and Tess are causing us stress…only one thing for it…..time to Celeb watch then shop shop shop……

Cheryl Cole – Poor darling, fighting for her love or maybe just her sanity but holding up in the style stakes with some fab hats and very cool bronze Aviators. Perfect colour with her luscious toffee coloured locks, now she just needs to find a perfect man….

Cheryl Cole wearing aviators

Lady GaGa – Ok they weren’t really glasses but how cool was her lace headgear with lace eye mask! She just has to get a mention for being so wonderfully bonkers!

Brad and Angelina – in a show of togetherness even wearing matching Avaitors, and those shades are as out of their sell by date as Brad’s tragic beard. Smarten up man! Then maybe Jen will do the whole world a favour and take you back.

Victoria Beckham – Doing oversized with complete conviction, a huge smoky plastic in a very cool and retro octagonal shape. She may have her detractors but honestly, she never gets it wrong.

Well that’s better isn’t it, some serious style watching puts you right back on track for the must have list for Spring and we’re sure a bit of serious shopping will cheer Cheryl right up. You can’t rely on a man but there’s never heartbreak browsing the rails down Bond Street……

Real Men Real Style

Friday, February 26th, 2010

With the release of Tom Ford’s new film A Single Man, classic English style for men is back in the spotlight. As a designer Ford is known for his attention to detail and the elegance he brings to his work, so his film was bound to be a dazzling showcase for his expertise. Colin Firth has earned rave reviews for his understated performance, and his look for the film and his iconic geek specs are a huge part of his character. So who suits the look? And what if it’s not for you?

Colin Firth on Set of A Single Man

Colin Firth on Set of A Single Man

Classic English – This is the grown up, tailored look that Colin does so beautifully in the film. Think smart suits, dazzling white shirts, classic tailoring and a huge amount of class. Specs should be subtle tortoiseshell or black, with sleek lines and minimal detail. Frames that are forever in fashion would suit you, so go for a classic Aviator or NHS style heavy plastic.

Sporty – If you’re more at home on the track or clad in Lycra, then look for streamlined and well fitted, lightweight frames. A light as air metal or very skinny plastic will keep out the breeze and stay in place during your more energetic moments. Look for contours that follow your face, possibly with light reacting lenses or a dark tint if you’re a fan of sport on the water.

Techno Trend Setter – If you’re never seen without the latest electronic offering and life didn’t exist before your i-phone, add a dash of techno detail to your frames. Funky hinges, sharp rectangular metals, a hint of bright coloured lining will suit your innovative way of life.

Traditional – If you’re the solid dependable type you may not want to stand out in the crowd. Something simple but functional will keep you within your comfort zone and do the job for you. Steer clear of anything loud and obvious, go for quiet muted tones that blend with you, and a softer take on the trendiest shapes, in soft plastics or slender metals.

Hippy Hero – If you favour a pony tail and hand knit sweaters then the John Lennon look is for you. Hunt out skinny round metals in classic gold or silver, in as small a size as you can find. Or re-glaze a vintage round plastic, there are plenty to be found in markets. Just try not to pick up any real shell, we don’t want to go back to those bad old days. Retro blue or yellow tints are the ultimate in hippy chic, so take control of your flower power!

Real men ooze individual style, so take the time to think about yours…..and don’t panic, if you haven’t got it you can always buy it!!
