The IGC (The Internet Glasses Company) Awards 2010!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

With Lady Gaga wiping the board at the Brits and the film world awash with Oscar and Bafta talk, our thoughts turn to a review of who we would give IGC Gongs to, if we had the chance to devote ourselves to such a spectacle…..

Award for Stunning Sunglass Wear – It has to be the great Victoria Beckham, with as many pairs of sunnies as she has Birkins. We love Victoria and her endless hunger for fashion, never afraid to change her look and what she looks through….

Award for Cool Specs Wear – Colin Firth naturally, delicious and sexy in his new film A Single Man. Any fashion icon that promotes eye wear is an inspiration to us speccy four eyes, and we always appreciate great spex!

Award for Best Collection – Christian Dior, for his delicious detailing and exquisite scattering of bling on his ladies frames. Jewellery for the face indeed, even worn by one or two of you with no prescription!

Award for Cool Italian Style – Gucci stunned us with their chic men’s wear, classic lines, cool detail, always on trend. A pleasure to wear and to admire.

Award for the Coolest Spec Case – Giorgio Armani, not content with clean lines, smart details, and super sexy understated style, he even has to produce am amazing  spec case! With tactile material and curves that don’t quit, this case is as desirable as one of his suits.

A Loss to Fashion

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The tragic loss of Lee Alexander McQueen this week has given rise to many articles in the media about his career, and the designs he produced for his catwalk shows. Hailed by many as a true creative genius, others often could not understand McQueen’s vision. Opinion is always divided about the work of great Couturiers – a case of the Emperor’s New Clothes? As more and more designers take on Optical assignments and bring us new eye glass styles, we should consider the work of innovators and appreciate what they bring to our everyday lives.

Anything that makes an everyday chore more pleasurable must be applauded, and this has been very evident with spectacles. A medical device that many of us need to function in our everyday lives has become a must have accessory and a desirable purchase. This first became apparent when Designers moved into the eye wear market and began transforming the humble spec into a piece of fashion.

A trend that began with Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior during the Eighties designer boom is now a multi-million pound industry and has ended the misery of glasses wear for many. McQueen himself produced a stunning eyewear range, as do countless others. Who wouldn’t want to buy something they enjoy wearing? Even if you don’t appreciate a specific designer frame, you will still reap the benefits of their inspiration as their innovation filters down through all manufactures ranges.

McQueen stunned the fashionistas with his Highland Rape Collection in 1995, displaying some shocking rear cleavage on the catwalk, but for many years afterwards we were all wearing low slung jeans and sharp tailoring that owed much to his initial vision. Eye wear follows suit, with detailing, colours, and shapes providing inspiration for many collections that follow the trend setters. Never dismiss designers as being detached from your world, or out of touch with reality. Like McQueen they all come up with the look for the season, and our lives are made more colourful and aesthetically pleasing because of it. We have lost a true fashion great this week, and even if you don’t think he touched your life, his influence and vision has in reality affected us all.

Celeb Watch February 2010

Friday, February 12th, 2010

An exhausting week darling Celeb watchers, as we gear up for new season fashion hitting the shops, and watch with bated breath as Brad and Angelina fall apart at the seams. Good news for Jen? Every cloud…..and Brad might finally ditch that dreadful beard if he has to get back out there on the dating scene. He might also ditch those vintage Porsche design sunnies and get with it in time to find a new Valentine – look no further Brad, we’re here if you need us, and we have a few hot fashion trends to suggest to you…….

Catherine Zeta-Jones – not often mentioned here at Celeb watch as she seems to like dressing to match her husband’s advanced age, but deliciously on trend this week with her fab pins out on show and a cool and chic black aviator.

Jennifer Lopez – picking up a hot look for summer, huge round plastics, adorably accessorised with her twins. The high rimmed frame is flattering and tres chic on oval faces, and it’s subtly retro. If it was good enough for Jackie O, it’s good enough for J-Lo.

Beyonce – The Wayfarer trend never goes away, but Beyonce brings it bang up to date this week, wearing the shape in a huge size, with the totally flat top it totally flatters her heavy fringe that sits perfectly on the top of the frame.

Meanwhile, loosing the plot, fashion blogger Tavi the precocious little darling, what was she thinking? Grey hair and old lady specs may be different, but different certainly ain’t always good. As Brad found out when he ditched the Californian blonde for the sultry brunette with the vial of blood as an accessory……

High Flying Style

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Men’s fashion is always a tricky issue. Without the endless choice that girls are offered their options are limited, and those striving to find a new look are restricted in their choices. As with clothes, the need to conform for your career can also frustrate you if you’re a dedicated follower of fashion.

Your eyewear can help you to look individual without resorting to the dodgier side of fashion. A cool and classic style for the guy who wants to stand out is the Aviator. This was designed in the fifties as a sunglass frame, a highly practical shape which gives maximum protection from glare. The double bridge makes it strong, and as anyone who has seen Topgun knows, it looks really really cool!

It has been a favourite ever since, dipping in and out of fashion for ophthalmic frames, and always a best seller as a sunnie. The double bar across the bridge was always a particularly masculine feature, and although it works well on sunnies for girls, it’s rarely seen as a feature with clear lenses with lady’s frames.

Steer clear of the Aviator if you have a strong prescription as the lenses will be thick and heavy, it’s actually best for lower powers. It will be hard wearing thanks to the double bar, and is a good investment piece as it’s always a classic. It suits most face shapes, although don’t go for it if it will rest on your cheekbones. There are subtly different shapes within this style bracket, varying from the extreme teardrop shape to more angular, squared off edges. The classic colours are gold, silver and black, as the retro styling suits simplicity.

You’ll be in the good company of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Russell Brand and James Blunt in your Aviator, so fly high in your stylish eyewear!

Celeb Watch New Year 2010

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Happy New Year Celeb Watchers! Given up on those tedious resolutions yet? Taken up smoking, drinking, and shopping for England again? Good girls! Life’s too short for abstinence, when we’ve got all those new season looks to think about. Maybe we need a little help with some divine inspiration from our divine Celeb crushes….

Robbie Williams – channelling 2009 style in  the classic Wayfarer Clubmaster frame. Get with it Robster! That look is sooo Noughties, and we thought you’d put all those bad things from the last decade behind you…..

Katy Perry – Loved up with Russell (her new husband?! Wild!) And looking seriously cool in a slim gold Aviator. Although not always famed for classic chic Katy hits the right style notes this time.

Katy Perry in Gold Coloured Aviators

Lily Cole – Sometimes comes up with some interestingly individual looks but echoing Katy, in a sharp Aviator which looks stunning with her Titian locks and milky white skin. Truly gilding the lily!

Couple of style notes though Celebs – Kate – Miss Moss is still wearing her Wayfarer, which is so last decade it’s practically back in! Kate come on, you’re an innovator not a Robbie Williams impersonator! Nicole Ritchie, guilty of many crimes against fashion, in a Chanel that should have Coco turning in her grave. Even high fashion can be a big big mistake…….

Celeb Watch Christmas 2009

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Happy festive frivolities Celeb Watchers! Have you all been good boys and girls this year? Let’s hope not!! We’re lounging in our party frocks, sipping our Champagne cocktails, and looking forward to the thrill of all of our presents. What bliss! So if some fab new shades are top of your Christmas list then take note of our beloved Celebs, always worth watching!

Jennifer Anniston – Our fave singleton seen out and about in a gorgeous shiny gold metal Aviator that matches her sunny gold hair. A soft brown tint looks delicious against that subtle Californian tan – how can she still be single?!!

Stella McCartney – Very austere in a sharp and classic black Rayban, the ever popular Wayfarer. Hmmm…… we expected something a little more original from you Stella…..

Angelina Jolie – We hate to mention her in the same column as our Jen – but we have to admit we love her chunky rimless Aviator. Does Brad love it too? Time will tell, will 2010 be the end for Brangelina? And is Jen celeb watching herself?!!

Angelina Jolie in her rimless aviators

Robert Pattinson – Everyone’s favourite vampire hiding in the shadows in a chunky square plastic. Square shouldn’t go with that manly jaw but anything suits you if you’re beautiful, and we presume Kristen thinks so too…..

So keep a keen eye out for your Celeb faves over the festive season, whatever the weather those shades will be firmly perched on perfect cheekbones. Then of course you have to know what to wear for the ski season, après ski parties, emerging Spring fashion……so much shopping to do so little time!

Celeb Watch Early Winter 2009

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Snuggle into those winter woolies, but be prepared to throw them off to party! What better for making an entrance, whether to the office party or on the red carpet, than a pair of hot hot shades? Santa draws ever nearer Celeb fans, so you’d better be good…..and what are the good ones wearing this week?

Russell Brand & Katy Perry – loved up and looking sensational in their shades – matching Aviators, how cute! Russ goes for black of course, in a dramatic plastic Aviator, while Katy goes for a softer gold version. There’s always a version of style to suit everyone, and these two look well suited but not too matchy-matchy in theirs. Adorable!

Sienna Miller – an interesting take on an iconic shape. The proportions of the Wayfarer but with a cool little touch of gold on the trim, and a variation on the shape, classic with a twist – we like!

Brad Pitt – Got himself a new Aviator by the looks of it, gold and huge, with a really swept shape and a tint that gets darker towards the top of the lens. The perfect shape – but then Brad has got the perfect face!

Brad Pitt in his Gold Coloured Aviators

Robert Pattinson – everyone’s favourite vampire (especially Kristen Stewarts’ if the rumours are to be believed!) out in the sun with a classic Wayfarer perched on those killer cheekbones. V useful for camouflaging that ever changing eye colour……

So hit the hot spots Celeb watchers, in one of two choices if you like to go with Celeb style. Russell or Robert, what’s your thing this winter? We’re sure either would help to keep us warm on those long chilly nights…..

Celeb Watch Late Autumn 2009

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Put away those Pumpkin masks Celeb Watchers, it’s time to get into gear for the party season! Sequins and shoulder pads all the way into New Year! But how do we hide the evidence of those heady nights of excess? With our shades of course, so lets take some tips from our Celeb friends – check out their styles this week;

Angelina Jolie – is not having the best of times at the moment, but she looks pretty hot in her ENORMOUS SHADES – the biggest thing in the news since David Beckham appeared in those Armani pants….

Angelina Jolie in her enormous shades

Angelina Jolie in her enormous shades

Jemima Khan – moving on up from Hugh and radiant with her new man. They looked loved up in their matching shades, gold his and hers Aviators. Very cute!

Sienna Miller – following the fashion pack with massive shades, but going for a sharp square shape. Tints that graduate from dark to pale seem to be in this week, if Sienna and Jemima are the ones to watch.

Victoria Beckham – Hot hot hot with her new, tousled hair, and the darling of the fashion pack now her dresses are a smash hit. She balances her elfin features with a huge black plastic this week, and unlike Sienna she needs that softer, rounded shape.

So don’t panic and think that the lack of Summer sun means you have to pack your shades away with your sunscreen! If it’s good enough for our Celeb girls it’s good enough for you, star watchers! Maybe you should add a dazzling new pair to your Christmas list….

Celeb Watch Late October

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It’s that fab time of year Celeb watchers, when we can cover up our Botox disasters with Halloween masks and indulge in pumpkin soup to our heart’s content. Our Celebs have no such luxuries however, as they have to hit the circuit in frocks even more revealing than Cheryl’s X factor outfits. So let’s see what looks made the headlines this week…

Gwen Stefani – this girl always rocks! Bang on trend with this season’s bright red lipstick, and a huge square sunnie with a cool graduated lens.

Gwen Stefani Cool Sunnies with graduated lens

Prince – The purple popstar managed to find a sharp pair of shades with a very sleek side shield that looked stylish and mysterious. Of course everything looks pretty big on him but he’s always cool!

Elle Macpherson – the body shows she can do the face as well! Gorgeous, tall, svelte, in a square sunnie that sits high on the brows, to give balance to her oval face.

Julianne Moore – with her hot Autumnal colouring Julianne hit on the perfect sunnies for her, a rich tortoiseshell that looks delicious with her warm skin and hair tones. Black may be the fashion packs fave but you go girl – stay true to what nature gave you!

So snuggle up in your legwarmers and sweater dresses, but do slip on the Celeb shades when you venture outside for tricks and treats! It may be cold outside but it’s always warm in Harvey Nicols darlings, so there’s no excuse not to shop, and we’ve all got those Christmas lists to write….

Celeb Watch October 2009

Monday, October 12th, 2009

After the hectic social whirl of London fashion week we’re itching to wriggle our toes out of our Jimmy Choos and relax with some celeb watching – quaffing all those champagne cocktails is simply tooo strenuous. Our fave Celebs were all out and about during fashion week of course, and the delicious Indian summer gave them the opportunity to shine in their sunnies……

Victoria Beckham – the ultimate Celeb and darling of fashion week with her seriously chic collection. Adding a little more edge to her look has worked wonders and she’s now ahead of the fashion pack. To enhance this sharp new image she accessorised with her trademark MASSIVE shades in classic black. Stunning with that gamine crop and her tiny face.

Victoria Beckham massive sunshades

Mary-Kate Olsen – These girls are so cool, and Mary-Kate took her place front row at the runway in very Victoria-esque big square shades, obscuring half her face but nicely balanced by a cloud of golden waves.

Anna Wintour – Crushed under the weight of her enormous Wayfarer shaped sunnies, a little overpowering on her small frame. Still, if it’s one thing Anna does, it’s power…..

Anna Wintour - Wayfarer shaped sunnies

Kim Catrall – We are loving the sneaky shots of the new Sex in the City film!! Cannot wait – but peeks at the trends are keeping us going! Kim looked fabulous this week in very big plastic sunnies, but with a neat little twaist of some subtle detail – this girl rocks!

So keep an eye on our Celebs and stay ahead of the pack this season, shoulder pads and shoe boots at the ready, and the biggest sunnies you can find. October will be vampire month – New Moon, True Blood – giving us the perfect excuse to go all goth vampire and Celeb trendy in our shades – two looks for the price of one!
