The Rise of the Designer

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Since the 1970’s and the first appearance of the Designer jean, the serious shoppers amongst us have lusted after the starry delights of properly posh products from the Hermes Birkin to the latest Dolce Corset dress. Specs were a relatively latecomer to this phenomenon, with clothing, accessories and perfumes filling our closets and our dreams before we got around to thinking about that all important piece of jewellery for the face. So what has designer eyewear meant to us? What do you get for your hard earned cash, and will it enhance your life or at least your vision?

So the basic question……what does Designer really mean? It should mean you are paying a slightly higher price for the excitement of the latest and boldest shapes, innovative colours and decoration, and the best quality materials. You really do get what you pay for, and remember that an international fashion house like Gucci or Christain Dior will not put their name to a shoddy or poorly designed product. You are getting your own little piece of luxury for everyday wear, with superior construction, exclusivity, and style. The problem today is that any ambitious manufacturer will stick any exotic sounding name on a frame and call it Designer! Don’t be fooled – it will cost you more so make sure you get more! Stick to the well known and trusted names in fashion – Pucci, Prada, Fendi, Chanel, Hugo Boss – for example to know you are getting what you’ve paid for. You’ll get an excellent quality product that will last longer, be comfortable, and provide stable housing for your lenses. This strength and durability may also mean your sight is always properly corrected, as ill-fitting specs can affect your sight as well as your comfort.

Back in the dark days when the NHS called the shots in our eyewear choices, we had very little say in what we wore, and many a child feared the dread news that they needed glasses. Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier and YSL were among the first Designers who bought joy to our hearts and fashion to our faces with their stunning eyewear designs, and we haven’t looked back! Eye wear is now a must have accessory, not a grudge purchase, and anything that prevents bullying and low esteem must be applauded – this is a huge issue for some, so never dismiss fashion as frivolous.

You may be a Marc Jacobs girl or a Paul Smith boy, but don’t worry that you’re only paying for the name. You’re paying for quality and style, and who could ask for more than that!

Totally on Trend

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Now we’re settled into 2011, and thinking forward to lighter nights and brighter days, new looks for the season hit the fashion pages and the High Street. Watching the tried old Sale stock disappear, to be replaced with fresh funky fashion is always an exciting time, and eye wear is no exception. So what have we seen to tempt us so far this year?

Retro is definitely back again – there really is nothing new in fashion!! The surprise for this year is round shapes, which were due for a revival as we haven’t seen them for some time. This very American, preppie look, will be totally new for youngsters, as it hasn’t hit our shelves since the Eighties. The most flattering round eye has a straight top rim, with all the curves below the brow. Christian Dior, Paul Smith and Gucci are all working on this look at the moment.

Sizes, as we predicted last year, are still getting bigger. This is great news for varifocals wearers, but if you’re very long or short sighted you may want to give this trend a miss – you’ll end up with heavier lenses. If you do take the plunge, choose thinner material lenses and prepare for increased weight on your nose!

In terms of look and material, whatever the size and shape you choose it’s still plastic frames for true fashionistas. Graduated colours, going from light to dark or a colour mix are cool, again it’s a retro trend that looks set to stay. For a twist on original frames it’s androgynous shapes in feminine colours that are cool this year, such as the boyish geek look in hot purple or bright blue.

The good news is that despite this hot fashion look, shapes are still mixed, with bigger and smaller frames, rectangular and round jostling for position on the shelves. So if your prescription dictates your choice, there are still plenty of options for you. This is a refreshing change, as all too often the designers plump for a uniform fashion that doesn’t allow for specific eyewear needs.

Celeb Watch – New Looks for New Year

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Wasn’t the festive season simply exhausting Celeb Watchers? All those hectic days planning our New Looks for New Year, endless partying, speculating on VB’s new maternity range……so much fashion forecasting, so little time…..and then there’s the impending nuptials and our homage to Kate hen night to plan – it’s all happening here at Celeb towers! Meanwhile, we haven’t taken our eye off the ball or the hot looks of our fave Celebs, and we definitely need some new sunnies to disguise the after effects of all those canapés and Krug……

Chloe Sevigny – Looking a bit of a curvy beach babe in Miami in equally curvy sunnies, a bold choice of bikini and deep round frames that accentuate her feminine jawline.

David Tennant – Still our fave Doctor, and time traveling hottie, seen around town with his fiancée (lucky lucky girl!) and sticking with the geek look we know and love.

Victoria Beckham – Everyone’s fave blooming Mummy-to-be (Sorry Amanda Holden!) dressing down and looking cool in LA in a smoky lens Aviator. We cannot wait to see what she comes up with in her next fashion collection now super sized will be the new skinny….

Beyonce – Another bootylcious babe accentuating her curves with a rounded sunnie – must be the must have look for the season. Or maybe she knows nobody is actually looking at the glasses…..

Obviously time to give up the gym and get stuck into the chocs ladies, as we’ll all be needing to pile on the pounds to get the shape of the season. Two weeks into New year and we actually get a resolution we can stick too……

New for New Year

Friday, January 14th, 2011

If you’re restless with anticipation of what the New Year will bring, waiting for the diet and detox to kick in, why not think about an easy and quick way to achieve that exciting new look – re-think your eye wear!

Dyed-in-the-wool contact lens patients might want to take the plunge and try going back to glasses for change. Frames are funky and more affordable then ever, and even non-prescription wearers are using specs just as an accessory. You can be studious, flirty, sparkly or serious with the right frame, and it will give your eyes a rest after the excesses of the party season. Thin material lenses make specs look good and feel more comfortable, so don’t be put off by heavy or unsightly specs you’re had in the past.

For spec wearers who want an update, up size to be on trend this new season. Go squarer, bolder, and bigger for a trendy look, with a unisex look for maximum style. Gone are weedy skinny metals, thankfully this is a fashion that’s practical! Bigger shapes are more comfortable for driving as you’re less aware of the edges, and will cover a multitude of sins as they draw attention away from crow’s feet and eye bags!

If you wear glasses but would like to try contact lenses, speak to your optician about the options available to you. Nowadays 99.9% of the population can wear lenses, so don’t think that your astigmatism or need for reading glasses will prevent you from wearing lenses. There are masses of lens materials, wear regimes and choices, and one will suit you, for part time or full time wear. Keep specs as a back up, or for work wear, and enjoy lenses for socialising or sport.

You may not have considered it but new eye wear can be life changing – from allowing you to make the most of your sight for a job or hobby, to simply boosting your confidence. Make a change and you’ll soon see the difference!!

Your New Year New Looks!

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Depending on your opinion of glasses, your worries about your eye health and your love of shopping, you’ve all got different feelings about choosing new spex. This year saw some changes to the eye fashion trends, and to the choices of some of our customers. Here are some reviews of new looks over the past twelve months:

Grace, 19 First pair of specs, black geek frame;

I didn’t mind being told I’ve got to have glasses because I think they’re pretty cool. My Mum and my friend looked online with me, I got a thick frame, like the one Mark Ronson wears. I’ve got blonde hair so I love the drama of it. Everyone says they like it so I’m happy!

Gerry 57, Swapped bifocals for varifocals;

I had bifocals because varis were so expensive at the High Street Optician. Now I’m online all the time I need the middle sight area, so I got varis from the IGC. I only wear them at the pc, for looking at my work, then the screen, and across the room at the clock. Brilliant, I won’t go back to bifocals.

Jake, 28, Went from rimless to heavy metal frame with photochromic lenses;

I had rimless glasses at first because I wasn’t confident about seeing myself in specs. I kept bending them and then the lens snapped so I chose a really sturdy frame with really thick sides and lenses that turn to sunspecs in the sun. They look fantastic! Everyone has commented on how funky I look! I’m getting married next year so I’ll order the same again but clear lenses.

Liz, 46, varifocals in red frame with diamante;

I’ve had reading glasses for a couple of years but kept losing them around the house! So I ordered varifocals because there was a refund if I didn’t like them. I now wear them most of the time because it’s easier to keep them on. I hated them for the first day but then I forgot they were there. Nice frame that’s comfy helped too.

Eye Wear Personalities!

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

When the Christmas excesses have worn off and we start looking forward to a bright fresh New Year, we often diet, or promise to give up smoking, or cut down on drinking etc etc…… For a quicker, easier way to a new look, you might be thinking of investing in new specs. Get some inspiration from your personality, and you won’t go far wrong………

Funky & Edgy – If you’re a trend setter not a follower, who loves the latest looks, then whether you’re a boy or a girl, the choice is simple. Large, bold, deep plastic frames with minimal detail in a dark colour is the look for you. Add a subtle twist with layered colour or a slightly see-through mottle with a two tone effect.

Classic and Traditional – Spec fashion always caters for the investment dresser, and you’ll be in style with a simple metal in gunmetal, gold or black. Find a frame that’s the width of your temples, with a little extra depth this year. Women can add a discreet touch of filigree detail or a tiny dash of diamante, men a sleek enamel inlay or sharp, etched geometric pattern.

Arty & Eclectic – If you like your fashion earthy and artistic, then go wild with vibrant colour, big retro shapes, and chunky decoration. For chaps it’s all about coloured lining, Eric Morcombe shape and proportion (In the frame, not you!!) and visible pin detail. For women it’s wild retro cat’s eye shapes, inlaid stones and flower and butterfly motifs.

Chic and Cool – If you like a minimalist look but something with a sexy touch of subtle fashion, then follow the trend but in a quieter way. Big but not oversized, coloured but not too flashy, detailed but not wildly over-decorated. Men might like a metal with a chunky rim and wider sides rather than a plastic, women might be tempted by pared down plastics and calm, neutral colours, like mink or tortoiseshell.

Follow your own instincts rather than slavishly adhering to fashion and you’ll find a frame that fits with your wardrobe, your look and your lifestyle. A new you without counting a calorie or denying yourself any of your favourite guilty pleasures!

2010 Trends

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Looking back over the year, we’ve seen quite a few style changes across Optics during 2010. The hints have been there over the past couple of years, but definite changes have occurred over a turbulent twelve months in our Economy, our Politics and our daily lives.

Expensive and delicate, high maintenance choices like rimless and semi-rimless frames have dramatically dropped in popularity. These specs were always a bit of an indulgence, costly to buy, with a high risk of breakage, and pricey to repair too. We’re seeing fewer and fewer orders for these, with fashion and cost dictating a more sensible choice.

Frames have got larger and more studious, with a more serious mood sweeping the country. The glamour of tiny jewellery like frames and delicate crystal encrusted plastics have given way to chunky, bold, unisex shapes with less decoration and a more utilitarian vibe. This gives rise to a sexy, young look which is edgy and cool for men and women. Even designers like Dior and Gucci, known for high fashion and decadence, have shifted their style to this Geek trend.

Sunglasses have always been a high fashion item which dictate the future look for ophthalmic frames. Shapes and sizes in sunnies predict our standard spec look for the coming months, but this year there has been more variety in styles. Where once the season firmly stated that this year’s sunnie was Aviator shaped, or a shield, or a Jackie O round, now each collection has a little of everything. This is excellent for consumer choice, and for each of us finding a shape that suits us, not the fashion!

Next year’s looks will evolve from this year’s as fashion seasons, as with clothes, straddle the calendar year. More large sizes, more simple square shapes, less rimless. If you’re thinking of a new look, then take inspiration from the last couple of months, to stay on trend over the next year.

Celeb Watch – The Big Chill 2010

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

This weather is simply ridiculous for words Celeb watchers – our Louboutins are too precious and our Jimmy Choo wellies too delicious to even think about setting foot outside the door. We’d be less graceful than Widders if we hit the High Street, and with no Anton to hold us up. Thank heavens for the net, and 24 hour shopping from the comfort of the sofa. One good thing about the weather – low sun means danger when we do get back behind the wheel, so some yummy sunnies are a must…………and this week we’ll be working our plastic on some black plastic if we want the Celeb look……..

Angelina Jolie – we are so not speaking to Ange – living with luscious Brad and now she’s been on set in Venice with Johnny Depp!!! The unfairness of it all!! And of course she’s totally beautiful, and wearing a very covetable pair of huge sunnies, round black plastics, presumably all the better for looking at Johnny while Brad can’t see……..

Victoria Beckham – Putting her own spin on the style of the moment, as ever. Now she’s a serious fashionista she can really rock a look. Skinny side huge black plastics with uber cool graduated lenses, for watching where those super high heels go, fabulous VB.

Courteney Cox – her love life might be a bit tricky but her look is perfect – square edged black plastics that suit her face shape to perfection. Ultra dark lenses conceal everything, and Courteney needs a bit of discretion at the moment, with David misbehaving……….

Sarah Jessica Parker – SJP goes her own way with a totally different version, a black plastic wrap- around, great for skiing or whatever she gets up to nowadays in the city! Oversized looks cool on her petite face.

So ditch the metal aviators and Wayfarers, so last month Celeb Watchers………now let’s hope for more snow, sun and sunnies!

Sixty is the New Thirty?!

Friday, December 17th, 2010

As the baby boomer generation grows older they’re showing no sign of growing up, and increasingly the line between fashions and eye wear choices of the young and old is more and more blurred (!) Unlike with clothing, specs don’t really have an age specific look anyway, with everyone from Anne Robinson to Chris Evans wearing geek plastics and funky finishes and shapes. So if you’re already Botoxing your blemishes and disguising your grey, what do you do with your eyewear to enhance your youthful looks and attitude?

The obvious first point is to avoid any specs that tell the world you are presbyopic, a change to vision that occurs when you are over forty. This is when the arms get too short and you need help for reading, so don’t delay! As soon as you find yourself pushing menus further away and squinting to thread a needle, get an eye exam and get some varifocals. No visible line, nothing to show you have a reading prescription in the lens, and you pretend you’re not a day over 39!! You can wear them all day every day, and no squinting means fewer crow’s feet into the bargain!

If you have a sprinkling of silver in your hair, avoid all frames with shiny metal, which will twinkle like tinsel and enhance your own, unwanted, natural highlights. Go for matt metal or preferably plastic, which will enhance your original hair colour. Bold plastics are seen as more youthful, and to detract years bling is seen as a bit more ageing than cool, geometric trims and detailing.

Frame shapes should be uplifting; as anything with a droop will enhance anything you’re got that’s drooping! Shapes that lift at the temple will lift your temples too, and detract from softening jaw lines. The retro cat’s eye look is perfect for sexy pizzazz – (and a tip – men love that strict secretary look, you have been warned!) If you have to wear varifocals, don’t assume that you need deep frames, as we did in the past. They’ll now fit into even the shallowest frame, so don’t let your lenses restrict you. Your mature years should mean you’re comfortable with your own style nowadays, so don’t let anything stop you – including your age – from looking stylish, sexy, and far less than sixty in your spex!

Party Looks

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

At the moment every magazine is full of exciting clothes and accessories, all with that essential smattering of sparkle to make you shine through the party season. We’re expected to have the essential LBD or sharp suit at the ready, along with dizzily high heels, vampish make up and the perfect bag and jewellery. But if you wear glasses, how do you make sure you still have the perfect look this season?

Wearing specs throws up several issues that you need to address. You’ll fall into one of two categories – the I-want-you-to-see-me-not-my-specs brigade, or the specs-are- hot-and-I-want-you-to-notice-them camp. Whichever describes you and your attitude to eye wear, you still want to co-ordinate, look good on photos, and make sure your efforts with make up and outfits are not wasted.

You should always add an anti-reflection coating to your glasses, which will give you safe vision after dark, and ensure that people see you and not their reflection in your lenses. This means your eye make is not wasted and that on photos your sparkling peepers look fantastic. Then the drive home will be safer too as the coating is the only thing that helps with the dazzle of oncoming headlights.

Experiment with your make up to help you decide if emphasising your lips or eyes will enhance your face and your specs the best. As a general rule, light rimless or metal specs need bolder eye make up, to make sure your eyes are a strong feature, bright chunky plastic frames need luscious lips to bring balance to the face. Depending on your colouring and that of your frames you need to choose the look to suit.

If you rely on your LBD to get you through the party season, then an update on your specs and some fresh accessories may be enough to update your entire party wardrobe. If you’re investing in a new dress, then lace is a hot look this year. A shiny black plastic frame will be the perfect antidote and stop you looking like the bad fairy that fell off the Christmas tree!
