I’m 27 & Now I need Glasses !?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I just got my first ever pair of glasses last week – it’s been an amazing experience that I want to share with you, as all my friends are bored with me going on about it!

At twenty seven I’m a late developer apparently, my husband is v excited about this as he’s hoping it’s not just about my eyes! Ha! Dream on. The Optician told me it’s unusual to be short sighted at my age with no previous prescription, but there you go, I’ve always liked to think I’m special! I’m -1.00 in my right eye, and -0.75 in the left. I need my glasses for TV, driving, and cinema etc.

I felt a bit disappointed about having them, but as I have a problem that can easily be sorted I’m telling myself to be brave. My husband always buys his specs with the online optician, so we browsed sites and made a short list. I tried his frames on to get an idea of size, and chose some Marc Jacobs – never turn down the chance to shop!!

The world is now a totally different place. There are bricks, leaves, and everything seems weirdly three dimensional. My rapidly developing crows feet have relaxed as I’m not squinting at road signs all the time. I’ve stopped wearing statement jewellery as I love having my specs do that for me. I feel more professional, better dressed, and
kind of grown up!

I wish I hadn’t put up with my short sightedness for so long, as I’m loving my glasses. The online optician is putting the corrective lenses in my Gucci sunnies too, which is cool as I love the frame. Must go now – need to re-watch all Brad Pitt DVDs now I can see him properly!!

Plastic Surgery!

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

When you see that many spec frames are made of plastic, it sounds a bit sub standard. Surely plastic  is kind of a bit, well, plasticy?! A bit cheap? But read on – plastic is an amazing frame material and  should be part of everybody’s eyewear wardrobe.

Plastic is what we wear nowadays as an alternative to metal frames. It’s kind of an evolution from the original frame materials of bone, horn, and real tortoiseshell. Bone and horn came up as beautifully polished, totally natural materials, but of course we do not use them now, as we have man made alternatives that are a little more friendly to wildlife! Shell was sourced from the Hawksbill Turtle, and was a beautifully colored, lightweight material – not so good for the poor turtle though!

Plastic now provides us with skin friendly, light weight frames in a dazzling array of colours. It can be inlaid with pattern, stones and glitter, or laminated in layers for a more subtle effect. Plastic frames have a moulded bridge, which is useful if you don’t like the feel of individual nose pads. It’s a cheap way to bring your look bang up to date, without breaking the bank. For girls and boys plastic is big news this Summer, in chunky shapes as bright as you dare. Updating your eyewear can take years off you – you may feel you’re not happy baring too much flesh or wearing younger fashions from the High Street, but any specs can be worn by anyone of any age. A little upsweep on the rims for ladies. or an up to date, angular shape for men will bring the compliments flooding in, so try a little fantastic plastic!

Luxury Glasses For Less

Friday, July 24th, 2009

You may have the style sense to appreciate designer, but at the moment it’s not the right time to splash the cash. Internet opticians can help because you’re only paying for the product – not the overheads of a High Street Optical Store. Think about the designer style that suits you, and then scale it down to suit your cash flow!

If you’re a sleek and powerful kind of guy then Mercedes Benz may be for you. Always classic, always cool, but if it’s outside your price range, take a look at IGC model Hampshire 1942. The neat sweep of the joints from front to side echoes the MB look. A similar prestige brand is Dunhill, who’ve been around for many years in the Optical market, designing specs alongside their other luxury goods. IGC Ferrucci 175, with it’s simple black polished plastic, brings Dunhill style to mind.

For something a little more wild, Gianfranco Ferre lovers like something with a touch more detail. IGC Leicester 1936 has a look way beyond it’s cost, with a funky pattern in the plastic sides. Dolce Gabbana always come up with something amazing, but never OTT,  IGC Feruchi 1275 is a chunky trendy metal, reminiscent of their collections.

For the girls, the choice is equally good. Like a bit of bling? Think Jimmy Choo – the footwear is too die for, and the eyewear is too. Check out IGC Episode 080. If you like detail but not diamante, then a touch of pattern may provide enough interest for you. Miss Sixty do it amazingly well, but IGC Episode 085 is a touch cheaper. A Pucci swirl is a pattern that’s endured since the 1960s. IGC Episode 093 has a fab design inlaid on the sides.

Of course if money is no object, then internet opticians can do genuine designer for an excellent price, and it’s guaranteed to be the real deal. See well, pay less, look great!

A Weight off My Nose!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I’ve just made a major investment in new glasses, and for the first time I’ve admitted how short sighted I am and sought some advice about having lenses that suit my lens power. The new glasses are lovely and the relief for my poor nose! So I’m sharing my story in case it helps anyone else out there!

I suddenly got short sighted at about 25, so although I’m now on the wrong side of forty I’m still not too blind without my specs. The sphere bit of my lenses is -4.50. This has gradually crept up over the years, so my glasses have got heavy as my lenses get thicker. (Apparently the more short sighted you are, the chunkier the outside rim of the lenses will be.) The look of the lenses has never bothered me, as I like loud, coloured plastic frames, and my lens is always hidden in the frame.

Two years ago I broke my nose (a four year old hit me with a tractor, thanks very much!) and the whole experience of glasses has never been the same since. My nose looks ok but is really sensitive to pressure. I discovered online opticians so I got a couple of pairs of specs, the weight feels a bit different in each one, and that helped. This time though when I got new ones I had thinned down lenses. These lenses are as strong as  my usual ones, but they are made of thinner plastic, so they are  not as chunky at the edges. I also chose a little frame, to cut down on how much lens I’ve got. The difference is amazing, and I’m now sending my other frames away to have thin lens put in those too. I thought my eyes weren’t that bad, but the IGC said that the lens thinning takes about about a third off the lens, which made all the difference to me – even after my impromptu nose job!

Suited and Booted!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I had glasses as a teenager, and to be honest never gave that much thought to them. My Mum picked them for me because I was too busy playing Tetris in the optician waiting room, and I just stuck them on when I was watching my James Bond videos. As I didn’t wear them all the time I didn’t bother with what they looked like.

I’ve since come round to the way of thinking that if real men can wear moisturiser, then they can wear cool glasses too. I like style as well as function – and what better partner to my i phone and macbook than specs that say I know a thing or two about fashion!

My girlfriend got me looking at online opticians, and started me thinking about specs. I’m now the proud owner of what she tells me is an eyewear wardrobe! I’ve got some geeky plastic frames which I like for work. They’re very comfortable and serious looking, cool with my dark suits. They’ve got a tiny bit of logo detail, but not too much.

I’ve got lenses that change in the sun in a more sporty frame, which I wear out of work. They are dark blue because I like casual denims and fat face type stuff, and they kind of co ordinate without me having to worry about it! They’re not exactly sunglasses but they do the job, and I wear them for driving.

Having not enjoyed wearing specs I now really like them, and if I’m known as that guy in the cool Guccis then that’s fine by me! The idea of buying them online appeals too, fire up the macbook and it’s there at my fingertips, and I don’t even have to go shopping!

My Online Optician Experience!

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

If you’re out there in Cyber space thinking of trying online glasses shopping, then let me share my experience with you. It’s cheap, it’s quick, it’s pretty exciting when you get them in the post, and it’s easy when you know how – and with a little help from your friends!

I ordered online because I broke my foot, and in the same accident my metal rim glasses. I wear them for driving, so I thought I’d have time to get them and try them before I could get back on the road. I researched lots of websites, and chose one where I could speak to a real person.

The easy bit was the frame. I liked browsing styles, and went for something similar to my old ones. Glasses frames have a size printed inside the side arm, so I chose a size the same as my old ones. I phoned Charles at the IGC, who confirmed that this would be perfect, and anyway they refund if you don’t like them. I chose the same anti-scratch and non-reflective layers that I always have.

Then you measure the distance from eye to eye – pupil distance. When my girlfriend came round we followed the instructions on the website, more fun than we’d had in ages!! I rang Charles again and he talked me through what we’d done, and was happy with our result. It’s not difficult and I let the website take me through ordering.

I got my glasses last week, and they’re great. I’ve already ordered another pair, having realised that I need a back up. They came to less than I paid at the High Street Optician. Thanks to Charles for his patience!

Are You Up to Scratch ?!

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I’m really enjoying buying my glasses online, because up until the net optician appeared on the scene I had a very expensive hobby – buying new prescription lenses because I kept scratching the ******* things!!! I just hope that some of you out there have done it and it’s not just me…….

When I was little my specs were changed every six months, so they were the type of NHS specials that Jarvis Cocker would kill for. I was before my time with the Jack Duckworth look due to the permanent lumps of very sticky plaster holding the arms on. Lenses were not anti-scratch then, and it showed! I gouged them on twigs in the garden, by using them to dig my favourite car out of the sandpit, (oops!) on the pavement when I fell over in them, and on the zip of my Mum’s cardie.

I put them in my cricket bag with a matchbox, my school bag with a metal ruler, and then the spare pair got wrecked after our holiday in the box with the shells I’d collected. I also discovered that if you try and remove the scratches with your Mum’s nail file it really doesn’t help…..

Nowadays I have a scratch resistant layer on my glasses. Please note the word resistant – it doesn’t help if you put your car keys in your pocket with them, or your dog runs off with them and his little puppy teeth find them soothing to chew. It helps with everyday wear and tear though, and now I’m shopping at the online optician I don’t have the expense or the embarrassment!

Steve’s Weird Week!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I’ve had a very weird week, feeling ever so slightly drunk for the last two days, without the joy of a drop passing my lips! Let me share with you the joy of my new varifocal glasses……

At forty three I started to notice that I was really squinting to see small print, the clincher being the fancy writing on the local gastro pub menu. I struggled on for a while, borrowing my wife’s groovy leopard print reading glasses, before admitting defeat and having an eye test. I’m ok for driving, but the optician agreed that I needed help with reading.

I thought about new glasses for a month or so, finding it difficult to make a decision about what lenses I should have. Messing around in an online optician site, I found I could try varifocals at a really low price, and send them back if I didn’t like them. So I went for it and got them last Friday.

They felt really strange when I first put them on, but the online optician told me to persevere, and try to get on with my reading, computer work etc. They felt odd when I looked to the side, but after the first two days I even liked them wearing them in the car, because I can see the dash board. They’re great for reading, and at the computer, and I think I’ve cracked it, now I’ve stopped feeling a bit sea sick in them.

Today I can type without feeling spaced out, and I think I’ll get a second pair to keep at work. I really miss that leopard look frame though……..

Losing Contact!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

After thirty years of contact lenses I have returned to the comfortable, stress free, simple life of glasses. But why? I hear you cry! Aren’t contact lenses easy and cheap nowadays? Don’t they make life easier? Read on – because not for me they didn’t!

I had lenses at the age of fourteen, when my Mum got fed up with broken glasses and weekly trips to the optician due to my energetic efforts on the foot ball field. I was hoping they would give the ball skills and possibly the pulling power of George Best.

Firstly, one blew out of my eye in the gravel car park when we arrived for an away match…….these were hard lenses – as in very hard to find! I played with one eye shut and luckily nobody could tell the difference. The replacement was dislodged while apple bobbing at a Halloween party. Luckily my red streaming eye went well with my Dracula outfit.

For my Uni years I was in soft lenses, where I enjoyed soft focus lectures by wearing them in the wrong eyes and wearing my flat mate’s lenses for two days without realising. Once I put both lenses in the same eye and they stuck together, never to be separated.

The final straw was when I left them in two glasses overnight, on a weekend away when I forgot my lens case. I drank the left one and decided enough was enough. My online optician supplied two groovy pairs of glasses for office and home, and I haven’t managed to loose them yet!

What kind of a shopper are you?

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I, like most British people, am addicted to online shopping! With the recent proliferation of incredible online discount stores, ‘on-line only’ merchandise, deals with free shipping and even on-line glasses sales, who can help not be? And that is why I have recently begun even buying my eyeglasses online.

I have found countless pairs of gorgeous designer frames for anywhere from sixty to ninety percent off of high street prices! And although it may be a little dorky of me, it is so fun to get packages in the mail. It is like you are getting a little present! I especially love it because sometimes they throw in little perfume samples.

Which brings me to the second type of shopper. The type of buyer who prefers to shop on the high street. Even if money was no object, I would still be an online shopper. Personally,  it’s just so much easier than crowded streets and shops. If I could just buy a pair of eyeglasses and walk out again, that would be one thing but I never come home with what I had originally wanted. This is why I’ve turned to buying my glasses online, the suprise and the fantasy are half the fun. And of course, you can try the glasses on by having them sent to you for a free home trial !!
