Nowadays we all know that eating well and exercising sensibly can improve our general fitness, and protect ourselves from disease too. It’s now proven that your eyes benefit from a healthy lifestyle too.
Even if you buy prescription glasses online, don’t forget to have eye examinations regularly. Opticians check the health of the eyes as well as giving you the prescription for your glasses, and online opticians won’t accept prescriptions unless they are up to date.
Exercise keeps eyes fit too! Scientists in Australian have just completed a study which proves that children are less likely to become short sighted if they spend plenty of time playing outside, benefiting from focussing long distance and from natural light. Exercise also improves oxygen levels in the eyes.
Smoking wreaks havoc throughout the body, and in the eyes has been linked to cataract development. Eating plenty of green vegetables and carrots provides vitamins to keep the eyes healthy, and you can also buy supplements to maintain or even improve your vision. Look for formulations with antioxidants, zinc, selenium, Vitamins A, C, and E, and magnesium. Lutein is of vital importance for eye health too.
Make sure your prescription glasses are of the correct strength, free of scratches, and give full UV protection if you spend a lot of time on the water or snow.

I have a confession to make – I’m a closet short sighted person who’s been wearing contact lenses for the past twenty years – and I’ve only just got a pair of glasses! I’ve seen the light! Mine is a cautionary tale for any spec phobics…….
I hated my glasses when I was little, they were always falling off or slipping down my nose, so I preferred squinting where possible. After several embarrassing occasions when I accosted strangers in the street, thinking it was my Mum etc, I finally got contact lenses, and I never looked back! Until a bout of conjunctivitis that is.
Conjunctivitis is an eye infection that some people call red eye – and mine certainly were, just in time for Comic Relief day! How seasonal! I was in agony and the doctor said that under no circumstances could I wear my contact lenses until the infection had cleared. My prescription glasses have a power of -6.00 – which means I can’t even cross the road without them.
I bit the bullet and visited an online optician. I phoned them for help and they were great. I ordered thin plastic prescription lenses, with a trendy plastic eyeglass frame. I was dreading the day they arrived, but at least I was able to see. I felt so self conscious – but I was amazed at how many compliments I got. The conjunctivitis finally went, but now I even wear my glasses for work, because I love my new look

If you’re visiting an online optician you’re obviously a smart shopper – price and fashion savvy. So let’s check out some key fashion trends for Spring and make sure they tie into your eyewear…..
With Mad Men influencing our look and our viewing habits this season, the secretarial fifties fashion vibe is back. Ultra feminine, classy and a little bit strict – something for everyone! If you adore pencil skirts and the re-emerging court shoe, then keep the theme with cats eye shaped, upswept eyeglass frames. Bold colours, little details at the outer corner of your lashes, flirtatious and very sexy!
The jumpsuit is back, for all you Mad March Hares leaping into spring. That fun Seventies disco look ties into the trend for Neon fashion – see below. If you hanker for those Roller Disco days then look for glasses frames in bold shapes and colours, with graduated tinted prescription lenses.
The first few watery rays of Spring sunshine always encourages us to bring some colour into our lives. The new palette includes yellow, orange, and of course the neons – you could go for a colour pop in vibrant spectacle frames, brightening and updating any outfit. Be daring with your glasses and of course if you invest in a few pairs you’ve got an eye wear wardrobe to match!

In the years since we exchanged our slide rules for calculators, more and more of us use computers for longer periods each day. This raises questions about eye health and the VDU screen, so if you are worried about the hours you spend slaving over your keyboard, read on…..
Problems can arise because of the amount of time we spend in front of our computers. To counteract this you need to do a spot of eye exercise and remember to blink often, which moistens the surface of the eye, and try to get into the habit of looking away from the screen at regular intervals. This alters your focus and helps to prevent eye strain and fatigue.
You may need prescription glasses for the computer, and if so, an anti-reflection coating will help to reduce the effects of glare. You should also make sure that the glasses you are wearing are at the correct focal length. Tell your optician how far away the screen is when you work.
Have regular eye tests with a qualified optician and make sure your prescription glasses are up to date. If you spend most of your working day on a computer your employer will pay for the test, and the cost of the spectacle lenses. Buy glasses online and you can afford a few pairs, so you’re never straining to see the screen without them.

As if I didn’t have enough to worry about, what with the grey hairs, the inexplicable sprouting hairs, the dreaded wrinkles, I am now incapable of even reading a newspaper without help. I was even examining my shirts in case my arms had actually shrunk, because I was having to stretch things further and further away to see small detail.
Disaster! I couldn’t even read the small print on the Viagra (!) – but at least there was a simple solution, not as drastic as dying my hair or having anything waxed. I had an eye test, and the optician explained that I am now presbyopic. Sounds painful but the only discomfort was to my wallet, and I invested in some prescription glasses for reading.
As we get older – more mature as I prefer to think of it – the eye ages too, and the lenses inside the eye loses the ability to focus on detail. The optician did cheer me up by saying it happens to everyone and of course things could always be worse! I’ve since visited an online optician and ordered some reading glasses from them too – you can never have too many pairs and I leave them all over the place.
My reading glasses are now a way of life, and I like to think my groovy metal frames have a certain sophisticated elegance to them. Now where did I put that Viagra bottle….

As a self confessed techno geek, I didn’t think glasses would be as interesting to me as the newest mobile phone or mp3 player. When I found out I needed help to read of course I had to do as much researching on line as I could, checking out all the options. I was really pleased to find some techno information to get me interested!
I found out that eyeglass frames are not just a couple of bits of wire that hold the prescription lenses in. (I admit it – I did think that to start with! My wife rolled her eyes at that because she is more interested in the shopping opportunity and loves fashion specs!)
The materials they make spectacle frames out of are state of the art. The core metal is built up with layers of different materials and then have many more coatings of colours and lacquers, including protection against your skin and pollutants. Sometimes they use Stainless Steel or Titanium which is durable, lightweight, and strong.
Hinges often incorporate springs, which help eyeglass frames to keep their shape and stop the joints from wearing. Some specs have a nylon thread instead of a whole rim, which reduces the weight further. The spectacle lens has a groove cut into it which the thread bites into. I eventually chose a pair of these specs, in a cool geeky style of course!!

I love thin eyeglass frames but I’ve suffered with an allergy to metals since my teens. The problem flared up out of nowhere, with a reaction to some cool but pretty cheap costume jewellery! When I then became short sighted and needed prescription glasses this became a bigger problem.
It’s easy to avoid wearing metal necklaces etc but I really needed my specs. Lots of metal spectacle frames have nickel in them, which is usually the cause of reactions. The optician suggested plastic eyeglass frames, which I do love but I really wanted some neutral, lightweight eyewear too.
I picked up an article from an online optician and read about Titanium eyeglass frames. Titanium is very lightweight, very strong, but more importantly for me, does not cause an allergic reaction. If I wore ordinary metal spectacle frames I would get a rash all across my face and around my ears.
The frames were a little more expensive than my previous glasses, but getting glasses online is obviously a cheaper option. I was really pleased when I first put them on. They are very light and I like the new look – subtle specs and no bright red rash!

Ever taken your glasses off and found red marks across your nose? Or dents on the tops of your ears? Not a good look! You might need to consider a little weight loss – off your glasses that is! Easier than dieting and more fun than the gym, a quick shop for new glasses could make you more comfortable and give you a new look.
The prescription you need for your glasses lenses governs the thickness and therefore the weight of your spectacles. Eyeglass frames are all roughly the same weight, so the way to make glasses feel lighter on your nose is to reduce the thickness or the size of the lenses.
Firstly, look for a spectacle frame which is as small as you feel happy with, and remember that a shallower frame is fashionable and won’t rest low down on those fabulous cheek bones of yours! Take a look at a face shape guide to help you choose, but smaller rather than larger will be lighter.
Secondly, choose thinner lenses which will be lighter and also look slimmer. These lenses are made of a material which is more dense than standard lenses – think of it as squashing the lens flatter. Usually as the spectacle lens power gets higher the lens gets thicker, but thinner lenses will cancel this out.
So remember – flatter lenses will flatter you, no calorie counting involved!

Do you ever feel worried about driving at night?
Do headlights dazzle you?
Do you feel your vision is worse after dark?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you should think about having an anti-reflection coating on your prescription glasses.
The first thing to do is to have an eye examination and make sure your glasses prescription is up to date. The optician will also check the health of your eyes to make sure there are no underlying problems.
You then need to choose lenses which have an anti-reflection coating on them. This is not the same as a tint, it is a colourless coating which blocks reflections and allows all available light through to your eyes. This means that your vision is clearer and you are as safe as you can be when driving.
The coating is also useful if you use a VDU, as in cutting glare it cuts down on eye strain too. People looking at you see through your lenses too, as the lenses not only enable you to see more clearly, they look almost invisible when in the eyeglass frames.
If your glasses do have tinted lenses your Optician will tell you if they can be worn for night driving. You should never wear anything but the lightest tint when night driving, it’s not safe and is also illegal. You could be endangering yourself and others if you wear incorrect lenses or tints.
