Celeb Watch Early Spring 2010

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

What an exhausting week Celeb fans! Having just recovered from the Baftas and making our must have list of hot designer items, this week we’ve been engrossed in the Oscars! The verdicts are in…..Sandra Bullock, perfection itself…..Dame Helen Millen……simply divine….Too many frocks, so little time….maybe for now we’ll content ourselves with some shades to cover the blood shot fashion hound eyes…..

Gwen Stefani – never gets it wrong! Cool and chic in massive sunnies that are a stylish update on the old Wayfarer. Black looks stunning against her white blonde locks.

Victoria Beckham – channelling her inner Audrey Hepburn in a very classy, smoky lens set in a Sixties shaped plastic.

Cheryl Cole – heart broken but gorgeous in an array of sunnies that would put even Victoria to shame!! Our faves were the Aviators, and the teardrop shape is so appropriate this week…

Whitney Port – showing you can do young and edgy by choosing a classic. Looks like the iconic Wayfarer but at Whitney’s age it’s fresh when worn oversized and with this season’s brand new utility trend.

Time to shop then Celeb fans! Go plastic, go huge, go black……and wait for the sunshine to illuminate the star struck!!

How To Be Remembered !

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

As fanatics about frames, we all fully appreciate the value of a good piece of facial furniture. We say don’t think of your specs as a medical device, see them as a piece of jewellery, a unique accessory – if you’re got it, flaunt it! Now how about taking it a step further – why not enhance your whole look with an iconic piece of eyewear?

A few examples of eyewear icons – the stylish ones that is, we’re not talking Dame Edna here – Karl Lagerfeld, never seen dressed in anything other than a high collar, a tie, his leather gloves, and a huge pair of specs. Think of Audrey Hepburn, peeping out from behind her huge plastic sunnies in breakfast at Tiffanys. Elvis in his Vegas shades, Michael Caine in his black rims. Real icons are not always the trend setters of today, they are the figures back through history who stay true to their style.

So how do you do iconic? You need to think about your signature look, and consider the wardrobe personality of your clothes. Classic, eclectic, edgy, vintage, casual, chic or fashion victim – your specs need to reflect your style, your personality and your budget. Unless you’re a total fashion Chameleon and you change your look more often than Kylie, you need something wearable that screams your name. Like a personal scent, you want people to recognise that style and think of you.

When you’ve sussed your clothes personality, make sure your specs reflect this, and then always base your choice around a similar type of frame, such as skinny metals, chunky plastics, fancy, plain, big or small. You can stay in fashion while keeping true to your look, and everyone will always remember you as the person with the cool specs!

History Repeating Itself?

With the tragic loss of Michael Jackson, nostalgia for his eighties heyday has been in the news this week. An interesting aspect of eyewear is the way it mirrors fashion and the look of the times but in a relatively subtle way. More people are likely to wear an eighties revival pair of sunnies or glasses then a military suit or a single sequined glove around town!

So how do you catch the look of the moment? With sunglasses it’s easy, as Aviators and huge round frames for girls have been in and out of fashion ever since they were invented. Everyone from Tom Cruise to Prince Harry wears them, and they’re an investment that will serve you well. For girls, ever since Audrey Hepburn peeped over the top of her huge black sunnies in Breakfast at Tiffanys, the look has barely changed. Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Madonna has their variation on the look, but if you want true eighties style make them as big as possible.

Ophthalmic glasses are a different matter, as eighties fashion is hardly anyone’s first choice of a good look! Women had huge frames with very dodgy tints, men had John Lennon round frames or their seventies throw back aviators. We’ve all been enjoying the lightweight joys of small frames for some time now, and most people would not want to go back to heavy, slipping, enormous specs. Second time around however, lenses are lighter, frame materials are thinner and more comfortable too, and frames are gradually getting bigger without the discomfort we suffered before.

So while you’ve got you’ve records back out and your white socks, remember Michael in his heyday, slip on your sunnies or your big specs, and be as Bad as you like!
