Totally on Trend

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Now we’re settled into 2011, and thinking forward to lighter nights and brighter days, new looks for the season hit the fashion pages and the High Street. Watching the tried old Sale stock disappear, to be replaced with fresh funky fashion is always an exciting time, and eye wear is no exception. So what have we seen to tempt us so far this year?

Retro is definitely back again – there really is nothing new in fashion!! The surprise for this year is round shapes, which were due for a revival as we haven’t seen them for some time. This very American, preppie look, will be totally new for youngsters, as it hasn’t hit our shelves since the Eighties. The most flattering round eye has a straight top rim, with all the curves below the brow. Christian Dior, Paul Smith and Gucci are all working on this look at the moment.

Sizes, as we predicted last year, are still getting bigger. This is great news for varifocals wearers, but if you’re very long or short sighted you may want to give this trend a miss – you’ll end up with heavier lenses. If you do take the plunge, choose thinner material lenses and prepare for increased weight on your nose!

In terms of look and material, whatever the size and shape you choose it’s still plastic frames for true fashionistas. Graduated colours, going from light to dark or a colour mix are cool, again it’s a retro trend that looks set to stay. For a twist on original frames it’s androgynous shapes in feminine colours that are cool this year, such as the boyish geek look in hot purple or bright blue.

The good news is that despite this hot fashion look, shapes are still mixed, with bigger and smaller frames, rectangular and round jostling for position on the shelves. So if your prescription dictates your choice, there are still plenty of options for you. This is a refreshing change, as all too often the designers plump for a uniform fashion that doesn’t allow for specific eyewear needs.

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

With Lady Gaga wiping the board at the Brits and the film world awash with Oscar and Bafta talk, our thoughts turn to a review of who we would give IGC Gongs to, if we had the chance to devote ourselves to such a spectacle…..

Award for Stunning Sunglass Wear – It has to be the great Victoria Beckham, with as many pairs of sunnies as she has Birkins. We love Victoria and her endless hunger for fashion, never afraid to change her look and what she looks through….

A Loss to Fashion

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The tragic loss of Lee Alexander McQueen this week has given rise to many articles in the media about his career, and the designs he produced for his catwalk shows. Hailed by many as a true creative genius, others often could not understand McQueen’s vision. Opinion is always divided about the work of great Couturiers – a case of the Emperor’s New Clothes? As more and more designers take on Optical assignments and bring us new eye glass styles, we should consider the work of innovators and appreciate what they bring to our everyday lives.

Anything that makes an everyday chore more pleasurable must be applauded, and this has been very evident with spectacles. A medical device that many of us need to function in our everyday lives has become a must have accessory and a desirable purchase. This first became apparent when Designers moved into the eye wear market and began transforming the humble spec into a piece of fashion.

A trend that began with Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior during the Eighties designer boom is now a multi-million pound industry and has ended the misery of glasses wear for many. McQueen himself produced a stunning eyewear range, as do countless others. Who wouldn’t want to buy something they enjoy wearing? Even if you don’t appreciate a specific designer frame, you will still reap the benefits of their inspiration as their innovation filters down through all manufactures ranges.

McQueen stunned the fashionistas with his Highland Rape Collection in 1995, displaying some shocking rear cleavage on the catwalk, but for many years afterwards we were all wearing low slung jeans and sharp tailoring that owed much to his initial vision. Eye wear follows suit, with detailing, colours, and shapes providing inspiration for many collections that follow the trend setters. Never dismiss designers as being detached from your world, or out of touch with reality. Like McQueen they all come up with the look for the season, and our lives are made more colourful and aesthetically pleasing because of it. We have lost a true fashion great this week, and even if you don’t think he touched your life, his influence and vision has in reality affected us all.

Big is Beautiful!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

There comes a time in every Fashionistas life when you have to be the one to set the trend, and take a brave leap into the fashion unknown. Well this was my week to go for it, and I’ve embraced a new look ready for the New Year! Big is beautiful fashion followers – and I’ve proved it!

I’ve been looking for a new pair of specs for ages, and really wanted something different this time. I’ve done rimless, tiny black metal, bright red plastic and everything in between. It’s always difficult to find something really wow, but having scoured the fashion pages I decided it was time to go big, and chose a huge blue Christian Dior, with very cool diamante bits on the sides.

I mailed the Internet Glasses Company to ask about my lens strength, as my Mum always had to have small frames because she’s very short sighted. Apparently it’s ok to go large with my prescription, which is quite low. They told me I could still have had big frames even with high power lenses if I ordered special thin lenses, but in the end I had thin lenses anyway to make sure they weren’t too heavy.

When the postman staggered up the path with my new specs I was very very excited, and couldn’t wait to hit the streets. For a start, I loved the sense of space – I could hardly see the rims around the frame, it was like contact lenses but without the pain! As the frame is plastic it didn’t feel too heavy although it’s twice the size of my old little metal specs. I was glad I had thin lenses though, they feel very light and apparently this lens is tougher. I’m sure I’ll get a few strange looks to start with, but I’m loving my new look, and setting a trend!

I’m Dreaming of a Glittery Christmas!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Excitement levels are at fever pitch in our office this week, with party season about to commence and the choccie advent calendars temptingly ready to go. As a confirmed speccy four eyes, since my teens, I’m always on the look out to expand my eyewear options. I do have contact lenses too, but I really like my glasses, so I set out last month to enhance my Christmas look with something a bit different….

Over the years I’ve had lots of glasses frames, from sporty Oakley to big flash Roberto Cavalli sunglasses. I loved them all and they always remind me of stuff I’ve done etc, but I’ve never had a pair of dressing up going out specs. I was flicking through Grazia magazine and checking out the ideas for Christmas jewellery etc when I suddenly thought about a real original accessory – sparkly bling specs!

I got online and had a good hunt through. There are loads about, gorgeous hot colours and funky details, and my Mum said I could have them for Christmas – there was no stopping me! I really liked one site, and mailed them because they send you the specs to try at home. Check them out – the www.theinternetglassescompany.co.uk I also told them about a frame I’d seen in an opticians, you never know until you ask!

They sent me the frames I like off their site, and ordered my dream frame in for me. (Ok, so I kind of got two pairs – but they’re a medical necessity -right?!) I settled on a Christian Dior with a beautiful jewel flower on the sides. These are my bit grown up, very dressy pair. The dream frame is Oscar and Fitch – they have a way cool website and loads of styles. Those glasses are black with metal hoops for sides and little sparkly diamonds, these are my out with the girls more fun pair. I love them both and am now ready to party through the New Year!

P.S. The Internet Glasses Company were impressed by Oscar and Fitch and will be stocking them soon – just shows what a good shopper I am!!

Designs on You!

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The concept of the ‘Designer’ product has come a long way since those heady, excess filled days of the eighties, when everyone was clamouring for jeans or other clothing bearing a logo. Prices have come down, so have reputations in some cases, and the flood of counterfeit goods has had an effect of the kudos of a named brand. Even in these credit crunch times however, there is a huge demand for luxury product, built to last, and the designer frames market has a huge place in this.

People often wonder if you’re just paying for the name with a designer product, but particularly with frames and sunglasses the stakes are high for designers if the quality doesn’t live up to the cost. Image the impact on a global brand like Giorgio Armani or Christian Dior if they supplied shoddy items of poor manufacture. These are multi million pound, internationally known names, and every item bearing their logo is a showpiece for them.

Designer labels need to be associated with quality

Designer labels need to be associated with quality

So you’re paying for workmanship and quality, and you’re also getting the assurance of a huge brand behind your precious piece of eyewear. What else do you get?!! You get innovation, and the chance to be ahead of the fashion pack. Every frame on the market will have been inspired by what the big brands are producing. Today’s Ralph Lauren will be echoed in a range brought out by mainstream suppliers tomorrow, but if you have the inspiration for the style it’ll be in fashion for some time to come, as it filters down to the mass market.

Often designer pieces are produced in limited quantity, with exclusive hand finished detail and luxury materials like gold, pearls, and hand enamelling. These specs will be made to last, we see vintage Christian Dior and Chanel from twenty years ago, still being worn and having new lenses fitted, and these styles are hot right now! Fashion has swung full circle to showcase bigger fames again.

So don’t be afraid to splash the cash on an investment purchase that will stand the test of time. You’ll be able to feel and see the quality, and be the envy of your friends! And if you still feel guilty remember that a Marc Jacobs spec frame is considerably less than a Marc Jacobs handbag – so really you’re saving money!!

Ageless Fashion

Friday, August 28th, 2009

As us ladies reach that certain age buying clothes becomes a bit of a nightmare. We reach for the latest must have item and are suddenly seized by doubt  - Too short? Too tight? Too low? Don’t despair ladies!  With eye wear fashion things are much easier. Some spectacle frames are clearly too young – too small or emblazoned with logos that are definitely for the younger crowd. Most eye wear however is pretty much ageless, so at least there’s one fashion that we not only need, but can totally indulge our girly tastes and go for what we want!

If you’re an understated dresser and have started buying classics rather than the season’s latest fad, you can pep up your look and try a taste of fashion with your specs. Simple clothes in plainer colours can be given a lift with some stylish eyewear, so go for a warm colour and a discreet amount of jewellery-type detail.

We’ve written before about colours for greying hair, and the rule is, stick to colours that always suited you – but go for shades that won’t drain you – warm pinks, reds, hot purple or tortoiseshell brown. Steer clear of crystal coloured big plastics or deep metals – unless you really want to look like your Grandma!

You may not squeeze into size zero designer clothes, but the specs will always fit you! A pretty Christian Dior with diamante trim or a Marc Jacobs with cool detail will re-awaken your fashion taste buds and give you back some cutting edge style. Keep an eye on the fashion pages for this season’s colours and the designers who are hot.

Age should never be a barrier to fashion – we just need to choose carefully and make the kids jealous of our style! With Coco before Chanel on release the fashionistas are predicting a return to more graceful, grown up style, and we can all be grateful for that!

Bully For You

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We all have an image of a geeky, bullied child in our minds, the clever kid who wears specs and is the target for the playground tough nuts. We would hope that in these enlightened times wearing glasses does not make you the target that it once did. Specs are cool nowadays, they’re trendy, funky, desirable.

If you were bullied as a child then the scars run deep. Many adults are not keen to wear their specs because they remember how they felt as a child victim. Gok Wan has spoken about his experiences in childhood, and how bullying affects self-esteem. He now revels in being a spec wearer, and it’s an important part of his image.

Geek chic is such a hot look at present that you may even look back with fondness at your childhood specs and see how trendy they were. If it’s good enough for Dr Who then it’s good enough for you! If you’re still not sure about wearing your glasses, then think carefully when choosing your new frames. See them as an accessory, a fashion item, a treat like any other exciting purchase.

Go for thin lenses and an anti-reflection coating to make your specs look as good as possible, and to get rid of the dreaded bottle bottom look. Funky frames with detail are interesting and a good way to express your personality. For a fraction of the cost of a designer handbag you get a wearable piece of fashion that’s totally you. That Gucci, Marc Jacobs or Christian Dior can be yours – and it’s a necessity not a luxury!

A browse amongst online optician sites will let you look in the comfort of your own home, if you find visiting the opticians traumatic. Look at it this way – not everyone is lucky enough to need specs!

Blooming Lovely!

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Flowers are not only popping up in our herbaceous borders, they’re turning up all over the High Street this season. Florals are big news for clothes, bags, shoes and accessories.  At the top end we’ve got Diane Von Furstenburg sending models down the runway in floaty florals, and for the mere mortals among us there are some really cute skirts at Topshop and good old Dorothy Perkins.  So what’s this got to do with eye wear?

Floral motifs have always been the perfect decoration for specs, adding a truly feminine detail to your glasses. Manufacturers are always looking out to add something to frames to spark our interest, and a bit of bling mixed with a dash of flower power really gets us girls going. (Some boys too but then each to their own!)
At the designer end of the market, some style Gods and Goddesses have always loved petal power. It’s a strong theme for Kenzo, Christian Dior and Miu Miu. It’s been a big fashion story for Chanel too – their rose encrusted jewellery is stunning, and as seen on Madonna, they’ve used it on their sunglasses and prescription frames too.

This look does filter down to all price ranges though – whether engraved or added on, flowers can be a simple or stunning trim on a frame temple or side. Check out TheInternetGlassesCompany.co.uk models Leicester 1959, Suffolk 1956 or York 2027 for some funky flower detail at a bargain price.

Back To Black

Monday, April 20th, 2009

We all know that in recent fashion seasons everything has been the new black, from grey to yellow and back again. Has black become boring? Easy? A uniform for anyone who thinks they’re cool and stylish? Now that detail and embellishment has become so popular in eyeglasses, maybe it’s time to take another look at black…

Black is a classic colour that can be cool for career wear and elegant for evening. Girls can now take that eternally chic look and give it a noughties twist. You can go for frames with a hint of decoration in a tiny sprinkling of crystals, or full on with as much bling as you dare. This can brighten up that LBD or give some personality to a smart black work suit. Check out frames by Christian Dior or Marc Jacobs.

Men needn’t be left out – laminated, sandwiched plastics will give interest and cool techno detail to otherwise simple frames, and let your personality shine through. Or you can choose plain black rims with clear layers to make the look less heavy, or a frame lined with a flash of colour. Take a look at Gucci or Hugo Boss.

Black can be dramatic with all colouring, although autumn colour toned skins may be better with dark brown for a similar but more flattering effect. It will enhance dark hair and skin tones or stand out in chic style with fairer colouring. Just don’t dismiss black as boring – the time has come to go back to black…..
