The Rise of the Designer

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Since the 1970’s and the first appearance of the Designer jean, the serious shoppers amongst us have lusted after the starry delights of properly posh products from the Hermes Birkin to the latest Dolce Corset dress. Specs were a relatively latecomer to this phenomenon, with clothing, accessories and perfumes filling our closets and our dreams before we got around to thinking about that all important piece of jewellery for the face. So what has designer eyewear meant to us? What do you get for your hard earned cash, and will it enhance your life or at least your vision?

So the basic question……what does Designer really mean? It should mean you are paying a slightly higher price for the excitement of the latest and boldest shapes, innovative colours and decoration, and the best quality materials. You really do get what you pay for, and remember that an international fashion house like Gucci or Christain Dior will not put their name to a shoddy or poorly designed product. You are getting your own little piece of luxury for everyday wear, with superior construction, exclusivity, and style. The problem today is that any ambitious manufacturer will stick any exotic sounding name on a frame and call it Designer! Don’t be fooled – it will cost you more so make sure you get more! Stick to the well known and trusted names in fashion – Pucci, Prada, Fendi, Chanel, Hugo Boss – for example to know you are getting what you’ve paid for. You’ll get an excellent quality product that will last longer, be comfortable, and provide stable housing for your lenses. This strength and durability may also mean your sight is always properly corrected, as ill-fitting specs can affect your sight as well as your comfort.

Back in the dark days when the NHS called the shots in our eyewear choices, we had very little say in what we wore, and many a child feared the dread news that they needed glasses. Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier and YSL were among the first Designers who bought joy to our hearts and fashion to our faces with their stunning eyewear designs, and we haven’t looked back! Eye wear is now a must have accessory, not a grudge purchase, and anything that prevents bullying and low esteem must be applauded – this is a huge issue for some, so never dismiss fashion as frivolous.

You may be a Marc Jacobs girl or a Paul Smith boy, but don’t worry that you’re only paying for the name. You’re paying for quality and style, and who could ask for more than that!

Totally on Trend

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Now we’re settled into 2011, and thinking forward to lighter nights and brighter days, new looks for the season hit the fashion pages and the High Street. Watching the tried old Sale stock disappear, to be replaced with fresh funky fashion is always an exciting time, and eye wear is no exception. So what have we seen to tempt us so far this year?

Retro is definitely back again – there really is nothing new in fashion!! The surprise for this year is round shapes, which were due for a revival as we haven’t seen them for some time. This very American, preppie look, will be totally new for youngsters, as it hasn’t hit our shelves since the Eighties. The most flattering round eye has a straight top rim, with all the curves below the brow. Christian Dior, Paul Smith and Gucci are all working on this look at the moment.

Sizes, as we predicted last year, are still getting bigger. This is great news for varifocals wearers, but if you’re very long or short sighted you may want to give this trend a miss – you’ll end up with heavier lenses. If you do take the plunge, choose thinner material lenses and prepare for increased weight on your nose!

In terms of look and material, whatever the size and shape you choose it’s still plastic frames for true fashionistas. Graduated colours, going from light to dark or a colour mix are cool, again it’s a retro trend that looks set to stay. For a twist on original frames it’s androgynous shapes in feminine colours that are cool this year, such as the boyish geek look in hot purple or bright blue.

The good news is that despite this hot fashion look, shapes are still mixed, with bigger and smaller frames, rectangular and round jostling for position on the shelves. So if your prescription dictates your choice, there are still plenty of options for you. This is a refreshing change, as all too often the designers plump for a uniform fashion that doesn’t allow for specific eyewear needs.

Animal Instincts

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Designers often use print to add interest on the inner face of frames, using them as a lining. This gives a glimpse of colour to the onlooker, with the wearer happy in the knowledge that they have a splash of secret sassy style! Animal prints are useful because the common colour palette of browns, creams and black tones in beautifully with ever popular tortoiseshell, brown and black frames. We often see it as a flash of trim, or as a feature to embellish side arms.

Sunglasses by designers like Cavalli, Gucci and Dolce & Gabanna usually add a hint of the wild animal to their collections. Their dramatic, oversized frames and broad sides give plenty of scope for wild and wacky colour schemes and design features. Sunnies often allow the designers to show their wild side, where an ophthalmic frame needs to be a little more sedate for everyday wear and to appeal to most tastes.

So would you suit the style? You probably need dark hair and brown or hazel eyes for a start, unless you love a clashing contrast! The main colour needs to match your hair or eyes or things look a bit chaotic, so look for tones that blend with you. A cool chunky plastic is chic with a dash of animal, while using it as print on metal is subtle and very wearable. It’s a great winter colour scheme as it adds matching interest to heavy fabrics and dark colours. So browse the collections and dare to be bold – unleash your inner animal and bag the big game look!

Chic Means Geek!

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Pay attention boys – you may have been thinking about a change of style, and the Geek frame has been around for a while and is showing no signs of going away. New collections from the likes of Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani and Gucci are all still full of hunky chunky solid plastic frames, and they’re getting bigger all the time. So if you’re taking the style plunge, how can you make the transition as easy as possible?

On the whole, boys are a little less adventurous than girls in changing their look. They’re not bombarded with images of products all the time; they don’t read quite as many fashion mags as girls. Men often grab the first thing they see, safe in the comfort zone of t shirts and jeans identical to the ten pairs they already have at home. So going for new specs can be a traumatic experience, and girls, you need to support your men folk with helpful advice and don’t giggle when they try something new! (Just steer them gently in the right direction – that is the direction you want them to take!)

One of the problems with going for a new look in glasses is that you’ve been used to the faithful old pair, and new frames make you look totally different. So take it in easy stages. If you’ve been wearing a metal frame, start thinking about slightly thicker frames. Don’t go from rimless to solid black plastic in one giant leap! Think about new materials but in the same shape or colour as your old frame, and evolve slowly from there. Try brown before you go for black, or look for a plastic that’s dark across the top but clear at the bottom.

Have a go with our try-before-you-buy offer at TheInternetGlassesCompany, which lets you put frames on in the comfort of your own home without anybody laughing! Canvass a few opinions only when you feel comfortable in your new look. When you hit on the perfect style you’ll wonder why it took you so long and you’ll never be seen dead in your old pair!

Dispensing All Over the World!

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

As internet glasses suppliers we obviously get orders from all over the place, and one of our dispensing team has had experience working in other corners of the globe. So besides the cultural differences between nations, are there differences in their eye wear too? You’d be surprised!

In the UK we’re very fashion forward, and always up for trying the latest trends. Other nations however have a certain penchant for specific looks, which is interesting. The Americans fall into quite different groups, there are of course the style gurus, who will go for the ‘in’ look, but despite the ups and downs of fashion many American men love the preppie style, and are always fond of very small, round frames. They also love the Clark Kent square plastic shape. Women in the US traditionally like bigger frames. The Scandinavians and Germans love clean cut lines, especially rimless and minimalist metals. Two of the world’s biggest lens manufacturers, Carl Zeiss and Rodenstock are German, so they are very up on new lens technology. Most of the famous rimless manufacturers, Polaris, Lindberg and Silhouette are from this part of the world, so maybe they’re being loyal to their native brands!

The Japanese love very funky, very groovy little, coloured plastic and metal frames, but then are famed for their love of kitsch and kookiness! As frame shapes get bigger this year it will be interesting to see if their frame choices get bigger too. The Italians and French with their abundance of talent in Couture adore designer labels, and as most of the big names in fashion – Fendi, Gucci, Dior, Versace, hail from here, then they clearly appreciate their home grown talent. The French also like quirky ranges like Face a Face and Alain Mikli, who are not couture houses but just make groovy eye wear.

So next time you travel abroad take a look at eyewear, and see if you agree with our impression of the national trends!

3D Glasses – The Sequel!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I blogged a while ago because I just got my first glasses, and was excited about a) buying Marc Jacobs frames – i.e. a real designer item with no guilt whatsoever, and b) actually being able to see, and c) my crows feet started to go into reverse as I wasn’t squinting anymore. So a whole new world opened up to me this summer, and here’s how I got on since!

Marc Jacobs Are The Ultimate In Style This Season

Marc Jacobs Are The Ultimate In Style This Season

I went to the optician for a follow up, he said it was unusual to suddenly be short sighted at 27, and he was interested to check me for further changes. He upped the prescription by a tiny amount, but I can still wear the beloved Marc Jacobs, and the Gucci sunnies that I put my lenses into. I skipped joyfully home and promptly ordered a pair of Diors, as I’m now paranoid about being without my specs! It was one thing to be illegal to drive when I didn’t know I was, but now the truth is out I barely walk down to the dust bin without my MJs on!

I don’t wear my glasses for close work, although it wouldn’t matter if I did, and weirdly I don’t like eating with them on! I wear them the rest of time though, and when I briefly took them off at the cinema last week, I was amazed at how fuzzy Sandra Bullock was! Everyone has complimented me on my specs, and two friends are now browsing online for their next pair – I find it dead simple and I like the chance to look through the range of glasses at home.

I think about make up and jewellery differently now, I don’t wear as much of either, I like letting the glasses do the accessorising for me! My optician also gave me daily contact lenses, which are fab, after the initial two weeks of stress and tantrum learning how to put them in! I keep a few for nights out if I want a change from my specs, but the extra effort involved in eye liner etc does make me long to just stick my glasses on.

So becoming a speccy four eyes wasn’t the end of the world, in fact it’s been lots of fun, although thankfully glasses are so gorgeous nowadays that wearing them is a treat. I’ll have another check up next year, how awful if I have to buy yet another pair of specs!

Super Sunnies

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

My excitement levels are so high this week that I’ve had to write and share with you. I’m the proud owner of my very own pair of one off, totally individual designer glasses, and the sun has come out to celebrate with me! I’ll let you in on the secret even though I know you’ll only want them too!

I’ve worn glasses since my teens, and being short sighted I need them all the time for driving, TV, walking around, shopping etc. I’ve always loved sunglasses but have not worn them since before I got a prescription, as of course I can’t see with them on. Browsing an online optician site, I realised that I could order frames and have a dark lens put into them, creating my one off sunnie specials!

I mailed the IGC to check what I would need. With my prescription and a dark tint they said I didn’t need a special UV filter, just a dark tint on my plastic lenses would be ok. I found out I could also have the anti-reflection coat which I have on my clear specs. I kept looking through my magazines to see what style to go for. I’ve got quite a little face so the Nicole Ritchie/ Victoria Beckham huge shades are silly on me.

I saw Chloe Sevigny in a square shaped black frame, Kate Moss has this style too, so I choose a Gucci frame which was near to this. I ordered it with dark grey lenses, and waited with breathless excitement for the post! They came within a week and I love love love them! They are the perfect size and shape and no one else has got a pair exactly like mine – so order yourself some but please pick your own!

Bully For You

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We all have an image of a geeky, bullied child in our minds, the clever kid who wears specs and is the target for the playground tough nuts. We would hope that in these enlightened times wearing glasses does not make you the target that it once did. Specs are cool nowadays, they’re trendy, funky, desirable.

If you were bullied as a child then the scars run deep. Many adults are not keen to wear their specs because they remember how they felt as a child victim. Gok Wan has spoken about his experiences in childhood, and how bullying affects self-esteem. He now revels in being a spec wearer, and it’s an important part of his image.

Geek chic is such a hot look at present that you may even look back with fondness at your childhood specs and see how trendy they were. If it’s good enough for Dr Who then it’s good enough for you! If you’re still not sure about wearing your glasses, then think carefully when choosing your new frames. See them as an accessory, a fashion item, a treat like any other exciting purchase.

Go for thin lenses and an anti-reflection coating to make your specs look as good as possible, and to get rid of the dreaded bottle bottom look. Funky frames with detail are interesting and a good way to express your personality. For a fraction of the cost of a designer handbag you get a wearable piece of fashion that’s totally you. That Gucci, Marc Jacobs or Christian Dior can be yours – and it’s a necessity not a luxury!

A browse amongst online optician sites will let you look in the comfort of your own home, if you find visiting the opticians traumatic. Look at it this way – not everyone is lucky enough to need specs!

Back To Black

Monday, April 20th, 2009

We all know that in recent fashion seasons everything has been the new black, from grey to yellow and back again. Has black become boring? Easy? A uniform for anyone who thinks they’re cool and stylish? Now that detail and embellishment has become so popular in eyeglasses, maybe it’s time to take another look at black…

Black is a classic colour that can be cool for career wear and elegant for evening. Girls can now take that eternally chic look and give it a noughties twist. You can go for frames with a hint of decoration in a tiny sprinkling of crystals, or full on with as much bling as you dare. This can brighten up that LBD or give some personality to a smart black work suit. Check out frames by Christian Dior or Marc Jacobs.

Men needn’t be left out – laminated, sandwiched plastics will give interest and cool techno detail to otherwise simple frames, and let your personality shine through. Or you can choose plain black rims with clear layers to make the look less heavy, or a frame lined with a flash of colour. Take a look at Gucci or Hugo Boss.

Black can be dramatic with all colouring, although autumn colour toned skins may be better with dark brown for a similar but more flattering effect. It will enhance dark hair and skin tones or stand out in chic style with fairer colouring. Just don’t dismiss black as boring – the time has come to go back to black…..
