Forget the old Christmas songs Celeb watchers, it ain’t Christmas that’s the most wonderful time of the year – it’s Autumn drop!!! Three cheers for shops simply bulging with hot new looks, strokeable velvet, strict little leather boots, slinky wrap dresses, the list goes on, and so does our overwhelming desire to shop ‘til you drop! So tiring, so new sunnies are a must, to hide those tell tale signs of fatigue and accessorise all areas……..
Sarah Jessica Parker – Pounding the celeb circuit to promote her new film, “I don’t know how she does it” and neither do we darling, she’s looking hot hot hot in a simply HUGE Aviator style wrap in slick black with a chic graduated tint – Kate Reddy looks good on you SJP…..
Madonna – behind the camera for a change, but then out and about promoting W.E. on the red carpet and all over town. Fabulous accessorising with a butterfly scattered dress and perfectly matched red sunnies, in a suitably Wallis Simpson inspired retro shape.
Pippa Middleton – Everyone’s favourite little sis hitting the streets in a very understated but very cool black plastic, with classic pared down styling, and no gaudy bling. Go Pippa – teaching all wannabe princesses a thing or two about regal chic.
Cheryl Cole – reported to be a little down in the dumps but looking as beautiful as ever Stateside, and looking lush in a rather groovy take on the old Ray ban Clubmaster, with chic temple detail. Chin up Chezza! Celeb Watch loves you……
Exhausted by the possibilities now, we must hit the streets before closing time, channelling the high flying Mum with too much to do thanks to SJP! So many purchases to make, so little time…..

Summer may finally be on it’s way Celeb Watchers! Even Brad and Angie might be coming into bloom again, along with the nude colour palette, SATC 2, and wedges. How can we stand the excitement?! A little retail therapy might help us to calm down, as always, so many shops, so little time….thank heavens for Net-a-Porter and 24 hour online purchasing, what joy!! So lets get a little Celeb divine inspiration….
Marina Diamandis – glittering even without those delicious backing diamonds, in the ever cool Wayfarer. Black is the only choice with her raven tresses, shine on Marina!
Gerard Butler – did he ditch Jen, or is it the other way round, or where they ever an item or are they now? Jen has more variety in her love life than Victoria Beckham has Birkins! Exhausting! Anyway, Gerard was fooling nobody, hiding behind a fairly chic Aviator with chunky wide sides.
Cheryl Cole – Sizzling and single, stunning in a huge black plastic that accentuates those razor sharp cheekbones. Hope your attitude towards Ashley is just as strong as your look
Madonna – Visiting Malawi with her girls, funky as ever in dark lenses with an uplifting shot of gold across the brow. The material girl was doing her bit for the children of Malawi, good works and good looks Madge!

Madonna in dark lenses
An exciting week all-in-all, Celeb watchers, and the good news is that with a bit of dedication to fashion we can let the election pass us by in a flurry of crunchy carrier bags and the thrill of the (pur)chase. Although it’s worth noting what Sarah Brown and SamCam are wearing and avoiding it at all costs….

Put down those hot cross buns Celeb watchers and focus focus focus on your next shopping expedition! Finding what’s hot in fashion might be harder than searching out that last egg on the hunt, but as ever, we’re here to help! Just for you we’ve scoured the fashion pages, sent our spies out on the streets, and examined shots of Brad, Johnny and Becks for hours on your behalf…..it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it…..
Catherine Zeta Jones – channelling Audrey Hepburn in a tres chic beret and cute and on trend retro huge cat’s eye shaped sunnie. Perfect shape on her heart shaped face.
Eddie Izzard – everyone’s sporting hero after his truly epic marathon for Sport Relief. Very cool and looking the part in his sporty aerodynamic shades, hope his mascara didn’t run too! A massive well done Eddie, and you look cool!
Madonna – The face of Dolce & Gabbana this season, check out her sizzling ads, and the huge sunnies she’s wearing. Stunning against her porcelain complexion, Madge still got it!
Russell Brand – he may be a bit naughty, he may even be a bit wicked, but he sure looks cool in his massive black Aviators. On a long face this shape is flattering and really really cool.

Russel Brand in his black aviators
So even if you pile on a few pounds munching your Lindt bunnies and crème eggs you can still shop for shoes and shades, without going up a size – hurrah! Get with the season, go big, go dark, and always go gorgeous….

With the tragic loss of Michael Jackson, nostalgia for his eighties heyday has been in the news this week. An interesting aspect of eyewear is the way it mirrors fashion and the look of the times but in a relatively subtle way. More people are likely to wear an eighties revival pair of sunnies or glasses then a military suit or a single sequined glove around town!
So how do you catch the look of the moment? With sunglasses it’s easy, as Aviators and huge round frames for girls have been in and out of fashion ever since they were invented. Everyone from Tom Cruise to Prince Harry wears them, and they’re an investment that will serve you well. For girls, ever since Audrey Hepburn peeped over the top of her huge black sunnies in Breakfast at Tiffanys, the look has barely changed. Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Madonna has their variation on the look, but if you want true eighties style make them as big as possible.
Ophthalmic glasses are a different matter, as eighties fashion is hardly anyone’s first choice of a good look! Women had huge frames with very dodgy tints, men had John Lennon round frames or their seventies throw back aviators. We’ve all been enjoying the lightweight joys of small frames for some time now, and most people would not want to go back to heavy, slipping, enormous specs. Second time around however, lenses are lighter, frame materials are thinner and more comfortable too, and frames are gradually getting bigger without the discomfort we suffered before.
So while you’ve got you’ve records back out and your white socks, remember Michael in his heyday, slip on your sunnies or your big specs, and be as Bad as you like!

As passionate believers in the power of eyewear, we think your total look should start with the specs and then work out from there! Always remember that your glasses frame is the first thing people will see when they look at your face, so let’s have a think about the all important wardrobe personality of your frames…..
Are you a hippy chick? Are you embracing the ditsy floral trend or clinging to the last remnants of boho chic? Sienna Miller spring to mind? Then you need to think soft, girly and feminine with your eyewear. Look for warm plastics in your favourite colour, with a sprinkling of delicate pattern. While outright bling may not be for you, little touches of detail or a subtle flower motif will be the finishing touch to your look.
Favour power suits and are excited about the return of the shoulder pad? Then your groomed, classic style will need to be enhanced by something smart and classy. We’re thinking Kate Silverton – grown up, not too wild, suitable for the board room. A metal in a neutral shade will be good, or the clean lines of a semi rimless. The detail here will be in etched stripes, neat trims, or maybe a contrasting, but not clashing colour.
If you would still love a dressing up box, and half your outfits are more like costumes, then you love the dramatic, the bold, the eclectic. (Lady GaGa we might just be thinking of you!) Your eyewear should be equally different, so think bright, think strong, eye catching and a little crazy. Balance strong colours in clothes with your frames, go for chunky plastic and a much bling as you can fit on.
Sporty girls with their long lithe limbs and gym fetish, need to soften any masculine sportswear with a sleek frame that’s lightweight and aerodynamic. Madonna even wears her sunnies with her gym gear – but that’s the price of celebrity! You can still choose a woman’s frame by going for a warm colour – although red or pink may bring attention to your flushed cheeks! Again, neat details like engraving or bevelled rims will add style but not too much glamour.
Any super achieving multi-taskers amongst us may switch from one personality to another through the course of a day! Change your specs accordingly and have fun – visit the online optician to hunt for some new looks!

Trends come and go, in eye wear as in any fashion, but every summer there’s a returning horror as predictable as soggy picnics. For some reason we all start to imagine we’re on the prom at St Tropez, and before we know it the dreaded white sunnies have come out of the drawer again!
Just like Liz Hurley in her white jeans, we all have an image of the ideal summer look, and despite the fact that white is hard to wear, isn’t very flattering on most English rose complexions – or indeed any others – and picks up stains from your hair dye, we do it every year. It didn’t look good in the eighties, can we make it look good now?
The important thing is the right shape – retro can be good but there are limits – don’t go round, don’t go too bug eyed, and choose a shade of white that suits you. Cold grey toned whites are good on cool complexions, shades of creamy white are good with olive toned skins. It looks classy lined with black or crystal white, as a contrast in colour helps to avoid the cheap and nasty effect.
Keep the white plain – don’t add bling or bright pattern, although white is good with turquoise – very Pucci and hot for summer. A discreet inlay or touch of silver is good, but keep the lines clean – think Bianca Jagger lounging in a trouser suit, not Madonna pretending to be like a virgin! This is one fashion that the seventies actually did better than the eighties, let’s see if we can actually nail it in the noughties!

Back in the good old days, when the NHS provided us with our eyewear, they had very specific ideas about styling the nation. In plastic frames, there was the ever trendy 524, the classic Dr Who shaped frame in black, blue, crystal, autumn leaf and pink. Even the toughest school bully could be reduced to tears at the threat of wearing them, and possibly the scariest adults too!
For the trendy hippies amongst you there was the classic John Lennon frame, a small metal with thin plastic rims that clipped in place. (Or not!) The joy of these was that the side arm attached to the front, so if you bashed them then the lens, the side, and the whole spec frame collapsed into a mangled pile of metal and glass.
The NHS stepped back from supplying our eye wear, and with the exception of Elvis Costello, The Proclaimers, and Harry Hill, we all moved on from our square plastic glasses. The eighties exploded in a riot of colour, huge shapes, and total lack of taste. (You only have the catch the opening credits of Ashes to Ashes to see what I mean) We also had a penchant for tints in lurid shades of pink and burgundy.
How times change – in 2009 the 524 is the epitome of geek chic – see Madonna, Lily Allen or Mark Ronson. The trend for colour is back, but this time in more subtle layers, patterns or laminates. We love detail, bling, and pattern – for boys and girls! Designer names are everywhere, and even Marc Jacobs and Paul Smith have taken some inspiration from those classic British NHS creations. Those were the good old days!

Flowers are not only popping up in our herbaceous borders, they’re turning up all over the High Street this season. Florals are big news for clothes, bags, shoes and accessories. At the top end we’ve got Diane Von Furstenburg sending models down the runway in floaty florals, and for the mere mortals among us there are some really cute skirts at Topshop and good old Dorothy Perkins. So what’s this got to do with eye wear?
Floral motifs have always been the perfect decoration for specs, adding a truly feminine detail to your glasses. Manufacturers are always looking out to add something to frames to spark our interest, and a bit of bling mixed with a dash of flower power really gets us girls going. (Some boys too but then each to their own!)
At the designer end of the market, some style Gods and Goddesses have always loved petal power. It’s a strong theme for Kenzo, Christian Dior and Miu Miu. It’s been a big fashion story for Chanel too – their rose encrusted jewellery is stunning, and as seen on Madonna, they’ve used it on their sunglasses and prescription frames too.
This look does filter down to all price ranges though – whether engraved or added on, flowers can be a simple or stunning trim on a frame temple or side. Check out TheInternetGlassesCompany.co.uk models Leicester 1959, Suffolk 1956 or York 2027 for some funky flower detail at a bargain price.

If you want a classic look for your eye wear that’s cool and has fashion staying power, then look no further than the geek frame. An iconic look embraced by everyone from Johnny Depp to Mark Ronson, Lily Allen to Madonna. History, style and fashion, what more could you want?
This look is characterised by chunky, heavy plastic frames in black or tortoiseshell brown, with a shape reminiscent of the old NHS plastic frame. It’s been in fashion for ever, and all eye wear collections feature some version of it. Variations on the theme can be squarer, more rounded, flat or curve topped.
Although high fashion, this type of glasses frame is practical – perfect if you are short sighted as it will cover up thick spectacle lens edges. It is sturdy and strong, and black or brown are always a chic choice for boys and girls alike. Even blondes like Chloe Sevigny have been seen wearing them, hers fade to clear at the lower edge. Katie Holmes, with her dark brunette colouring, favours solid black.
Try to make sure the top rim of the glasses frame sits in line with your brows – choose a curved top rim if your brows are arched, men or girls with straight brows can go for the classic square shape. Zachary Quinto and Josh Hartnett have been seen in shapes that suit their features perfectly.
