Faking It- Genuine Designer Glasses

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Over the last twenty years our desire for Designer goods has led to high quality, luxury products entering the market place in an industry that encompasses clothes, accessories, and of course glasses and sunspecs. We at the InternetGlassesCompany get the occasional enquiry as to the origins of our Designer ranges, with understandably anxious clients checking that our goods are authentic. The World Trade Organisation estimates that 8% of all goods sold worldwide are counterfeit, creating a negative effect for traders and the health of consumers.

With regards to our frames and sunglasses, we only stock products that are totally genuine, direct from the frame manufacturers in Italy. Like the manufacturers themselves we know that it’s in the interests of ourselves, the brand, the Optical industry and the vital clients to only use authentic product. Forgeries will be of inferior quality, using weak materials and possibly endangering the wearer. With specs this may mean skin allergies, lost lenses and uncomfortable frames.

In practice, we never accept frames which are not genuine. They are destroyed by manufacturers if they reach them to have new lenses or parts fitted, so be warned if you take a fake Oakley or RayBan to an Optician to have a screw or side arm replaced! They always spot them even if we don’t, and there are some very convincing reproductions out there. Always buy from a reputable stockist, check that the cases, cloths and logos are correct – a Ray ban spelled Ray Burn is a bit of a give away!  Note that if you wear dark sunglasses lenses which are not authentic, they’ll probably have no UV protection. The dark lens will allow light to flood into your unprotected eye and over time will cause damage to the retina and crystalline lens within the eye.

This year the Italian Association of Optical goods manufacturers are cracking down on counterfeits. They have strong interest in this problem as the vast proportion of Designer frames sold in Europe are from Italian design houses and factories. July 7th was the first national Anti-Counterfeiting day, and 5000 forged frames were crushed by a road roller as a symbol of their work. We welcome any move to stop the trade in counterfeit goods which will safeguard our business and the health of our patients.

Side View

Spec sides – or arms, or stems, – or whatever you like to call them, are very much fashion forward at the moment. Most of the decoration and interest on frames is all on the specially widened and in-your-face sides. It might be inlaid flowers for the girls or techno rivets for the boys, but the sides are where it’s at. Historically the sides of a frame have always had more interesting features than the fronts, in some very weird and wacky ways!

Children’s frames have shown some excellent innovation and inventiveness over the years – and the ears! For tiny babies there are sides that can be attached around the back of the head with elastic, or soft silicone curls tips that wrap around the back of the ear, to stop the most wilful toddler from whipping them off! The NHS used to supply very evil looking metal curl tips that dug in very nastily if not adjusted properly!

For adults we have seen strange little metal clips that grip the temple, as well as the very bizarre pince-nez, that simply grips the bridge of the nose! Generally it’s agreed however that a spec with sides that fit around or behind the ears work best. If you need a bit of extra grip for energetic hobbies then elastic sports bands that slip over the sides and clip at the back of the head do the job nicely. One manufacturer did make a frame that had little twiddly bits hidden in the sides to then lock together as a sports band, and I’m sure one or two patients somewhere found this very useful!

On thick modern frames the old fashioned library side has really made a come back. Instead of the more common hockey end, which curves behind the ear, the library goes straight back and curves smoothly against the skull. This can support a heavy frame really well, and the head is generally less sensitive than the sensitive skin behind the ear. Oakley re-started this trend with their straight sides, covered in the revolutionary ‘earsock’ a sheath of silicone that sticks to the skin as you work up a sweat on the sports field or the dance floor.

So there is more to sides than meets the eye, and don’t underestimate the technology that goes into this seemingly simple bit of metal or plastic that helps to correct your vision.

I’m Dreaming of a Glittery Christmas!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Excitement levels are at fever pitch in our office this week, with party season about to commence and the choccie advent calendars temptingly ready to go. As a confirmed speccy four eyes, since my teens, I’m always on the look out to expand my eyewear options. I do have contact lenses too, but I really like my glasses, so I set out last month to enhance my Christmas look with something a bit different….

Over the years I’ve had lots of glasses frames, from sporty Oakley to big flash Roberto Cavalli sunglasses. I loved them all and they always remind me of stuff I’ve done etc, but I’ve never had a pair of dressing up going out specs. I was flicking through Grazia magazine and checking out the ideas for Christmas jewellery etc when I suddenly thought about a real original accessory – sparkly bling specs!

I got online and had a good hunt through. There are loads about, gorgeous hot colours and funky details, and my Mum said I could have them for Christmas – there was no stopping me! I really liked one site, and mailed them because they send you the specs to try at home. Check them out – the www.theinternetglassescompany.co.uk I also told them about a frame I’d seen in an opticians, you never know until you ask!

They sent me the frames I like off their site, and ordered my dream frame in for me. (Ok, so I kind of got two pairs – but they’re a medical necessity -right?!) I settled on a Christian Dior with a beautiful jewel flower on the sides. These are my bit grown up, very dressy pair. The dream frame is Oscar and Fitch – they have a way cool website and loads of styles. Those glasses are black with metal hoops for sides and little sparkly diamonds, these are my out with the girls more fun pair. I love them both and am now ready to party through the New Year!

P.S. The Internet Glasses Company were impressed by Oscar and Fitch and will be stocking them soon – just shows what a good shopper I am!!
