Road Test – Anti-Reflection Coating

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I came to order my second ever pair of glasses last month, and after discussion of my symptoms with the optician he suggested that I try an anti-reflection layer on my lenses. This was all new to me as I’d had a very cheap and cheerful pair of glasses just for driving first time around. So here’s my summary of how I’ve got on with this exciting new product!

When I got my first glasses I thought I’d only want them now and again for in the car, as I’m only a bit short-sighted. Now it’s been two years and I find I need them for TV, driving all the time, and more importantly, shopping! I don’t like driving at night because I find that headlights dazzle me. The Optician said that the anti-reflection layer is the only thing that would help. The good news is that he said it would make my eyes more comfortable at the computer and under our office lights too.

When my glasses arrived I was curious as to what they would look like. They’re amazingly sparkly and clear, when you look at them they don’t appear to have any lenses in. My husband’s comment was that my eyes look really bright through them. When I examined the glasses I could see they have a weird green reflection on the back under bright light, but on my face they’re super invisible!

For driving they felt fantastic. With my new prescription and the coating everything was really sharp and clear, with no distracting shadows and reflections in the lens. At night they are wonderful, especially compared to my old glasses. I used to see really bright and dazzling reflections in the back of my glasses, even my eyelashes were visible on the back of the lens! That’s all gone now and my sight is brilliant.

At work I don’t seem to get as tired through the day, my screen seems much more comfortable to work at for long periods. I find I clean the specs more, because smudges show up more clearly. It’s a 100% improvement on my original specs and I’m pleased I went for it.

A Little Extra Help

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Thanks to the wonders of lower prices and easy availability, few of us now have just one pair of glasses for everything. If you want to make your life a little easier, have a think about some of the situations where a little extra help might smooth the way…..what more could you ask for from under £10……

An Extra Reading Pair – many people only use their reading specs for the odd moment when fine detail is difficult, such as a menu in a dimly restaurant or threading a needle. This is fine until you realise you’ve put them down somewhere, or left them at work. A simple extra reading pair will mean you can leave them wherever you need them.

Prescription Sunglasses – Squinting in the sun and envying cool sunnie wearers is no longer necessary as economical  prescription sunglasses are now within everyone’s reach. You can choose any frame you like, or re-use an old one of your own, and have your lenses put in with a dark tint. Leave them in the car or take away with you on holiday. At least on the beach no-one will be able to tell where you’re looking!

Glasses for Sport – Golfers sometimes find it hard to see the ball in their varifocals, swimmers can’t see full stop without their prescription, and people who play bowls may struggle in fashionable shallow frames. All of these would find their sport much easier if they wore a deeper frame with single vision prescription lenses. Golfers would be able to see where they are aiming, and clearly see the ball, swimmers can manage perfectly well with specs, they give a wider field of vision than goggles and are more comfortable. Bowls is better if you can see with the head dipped.

Strong Readers – The power we can give for close work is not a set power as it for long distance sight. If you need extra strength for fine detail – jewellery or card making, embroidery, tying flies, then we can calculate a higher prescription for you. This will give you more magnification at a closer distance, which will be comfortable for your job or hobby and make vision easier.

Whatever you do, we can make things better with an extra pair. Mail or phone us if you need advice, and we can give that little bit of extra help!

True Confessions!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I have a confession to make – I’m a closet short sighted person who’s been wearing contact lenses for the past twenty years – and I’ve only just got a pair of glasses! I’ve seen the light! Mine is a cautionary tale for any spec phobics…….

I hated my glasses when I was little, they were always falling off or slipping down my nose, so I preferred squinting where possible. After several embarrassing occasions when I accosted strangers in the street, thinking it was my Mum etc, I finally got contact lenses, and I never looked back! Until a bout of conjunctivitis that is.

Conjunctivitis is an eye infection that some people call red eye – and mine certainly were, just in time for Comic Relief day! How seasonal! I was in agony and the doctor said that under no circumstances could I wear my contact lenses until the infection had cleared. My prescription glasses have a power of -6.00 – which means I can’t even cross the road without them.

I bit the bullet and visited an online optician. I phoned them for help and they were great. I ordered thin plastic prescription lenses, with a trendy plastic eyeglass frame. I was dreading the day they arrived, but at least I was able to see. I felt so self conscious – but I was amazed at how many compliments I got. The conjunctivitis finally went, but now I even wear my glasses for work, because I love my new look
