Twice as Nice!

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Are you always wearing the wrong prescription glasses for whatever you’re doing? Do you constantly put your glasses down and forget where they are?! If you wear separate glasses for far and close vision, then this may be you and you can have a specs solution that makes life easier.

Bifocal glasses are not new technology, but they still do an excellent job if you want a cheap and simple pair of spex that gives you vision at two distances. The top of the lens usually has a distance prescription, for driving and watching television. The lower area of the lens has a visible segment that allows you to see close too.

Bifocal glasses are perfect if you want to read but then glance up at the TV, and if you find Varifocal glasses make you feel dizzy or disorientated then bifocals can be easier to use. The segment area is available in different sizes and shapes, so you should find one that suits you. They are also useful if you successfully wear Varifocals but would like a cheap extra pair, for jobs around the house or to keep in the car.

Separate pairs of distance and reading glasses can wear out quickly as you’re constantly taking them on and off. It’s also annoying to have to keep track of which pair you need at any particular time. We can’t help you to remember why you went upstairs, but with bifocals at least you’ll be able to see when you get there!

Driving Forward

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

I drive for a living, so during the hours I spend on the road I need to make sure I am comfortable and safe. I started to wear prescription glasses to correct my short sightedness when I was twenty, and I’m not legal to drive without them, so I thought I’d pass on some of my eye wear tips to you.

Firstly, keep your eye checks up to date, and only ever wear the correct lenses for driving. My optician sees me every two years, but I always order my prescription glasses from an online optician, as I like to have several current pairs to choose from. I keep at least one spare in the glove box, and check the screws regularly – since a lens fell out once while I was on the M1!

Secondly, choose your eye glass frames carefully. I like thin arms that don’t get in the way when I’m looking to the side – like when I’m joining the motorway. I go for big frames too, for maximum peripheral vision. I’ve got a rimless pair which are good, and a thin titanium frame which is comfy for wearing all day.

I’ve got one dark tinted pair which are perfect for sunny days – when we get them! Prescription sunglasses are as cheap as other glasses nowadays and I couldn’t manage without them. You can have photochromic lenses, which go dark in the sun, but behind some windscreens they don’t change enough.

Obviously my sunglasses are not suitable for night driving, and I always have my other glasses anti-reflection coated to help then. Lots of glasses but all for the same purpose – to keep me safe on the roads.

True Confessions!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I have a confession to make – I’m a closet short sighted person who’s been wearing contact lenses for the past twenty years – and I’ve only just got a pair of glasses! I’ve seen the light! Mine is a cautionary tale for any spec phobics…….

I hated my glasses when I was little, they were always falling off or slipping down my nose, so I preferred squinting where possible. After several embarrassing occasions when I accosted strangers in the street, thinking it was my Mum etc, I finally got contact lenses, and I never looked back! Until a bout of conjunctivitis that is.

Conjunctivitis is an eye infection that some people call red eye – and mine certainly were, just in time for Comic Relief day! How seasonal! I was in agony and the doctor said that under no circumstances could I wear my contact lenses until the infection had cleared. My prescription glasses have a power of -6.00 – which means I can’t even cross the road without them.

I bit the bullet and visited an online optician. I phoned them for help and they were great. I ordered thin plastic prescription lenses, with a trendy plastic eyeglass frame. I was dreading the day they arrived, but at least I was able to see. I felt so self conscious – but I was amazed at how many compliments I got. The conjunctivitis finally went, but now I even wear my glasses for work, because I love my new look

Eye Health For Computer Users

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

In the years since we exchanged our slide rules for calculators, more and more of us use computers for longer periods each day. This raises questions about eye health and the VDU screen, so if you are worried about the hours you spend slaving over your keyboard, read on…..

Problems can arise because of the amount of time we spend in front of our computers. To counteract this you need to do a spot of eye exercise and remember to blink often, which moistens the surface of the eye, and try to get into the habit of looking away from the screen at regular intervals. This alters your focus and helps to prevent eye strain and fatigue.

You may need prescription glasses for the computer, and if so, an anti-reflection coating will help to reduce the effects of glare. You should also make sure that the glasses you are wearing are at the correct focal length. Tell your optician how far away the screen is when you work.

Have regular eye tests with a qualified optician and make sure your prescription glasses are up to date. If you spend most of your working day on a computer your employer will pay for the test, and the cost of the spectacle lenses. Buy glasses online and you can afford a few pairs, so you’re never straining to see the screen without them.

Help – My Arms Got Too Short!!

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

As if I didn’t have enough to worry about, what with the grey hairs, the inexplicable sprouting hairs, the dreaded wrinkles, I am now incapable of even reading a newspaper without help. I was even examining my shirts in case my arms had actually shrunk, because I was having to stretch things further and further away to see small detail.

Disaster! I couldn’t even read the small print on the Viagra (!) – but at least there was a simple solution, not as drastic as dying my hair or having anything waxed. I had an eye test, and the optician explained that I am now presbyopic. Sounds painful but the only discomfort was to my wallet, and I invested in some prescription glasses for reading.

As we get older – more mature as I prefer to think of it – the eye ages too, and the lenses inside the eye loses the ability to focus on detail. The optician did cheer me up by saying it happens to everyone and of course things could always be worse! I’ve since visited an online optician and ordered some reading glasses from them too – you can never have too many pairs and I leave them all over the place.

My reading glasses are now a way of life, and I like to think my groovy metal frames have a certain sophisticated elegance to them. Now where did I put that Viagra bottle….

My Rash Decision!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I love thin eyeglass frames but I’ve suffered with an allergy to metals since my teens. The problem flared up out of nowhere, with a reaction to some cool but pretty cheap costume jewellery! When I then became short sighted and needed prescription glasses this became a bigger problem.

It’s easy to avoid wearing metal necklaces etc but I really needed my specs. Lots of metal spectacle frames have nickel in them, which is usually the cause of reactions. The optician suggested plastic eyeglass frames, which I do love but I really wanted some neutral, lightweight eyewear too.

I picked up an article from an online optician and read about Titanium eyeglass frames. Titanium is very lightweight, very strong, but more importantly for me, does not cause an allergic reaction. If I wore ordinary metal spectacle frames I would get a rash all across my face and around my ears.

The frames were a little more expensive than my previous glasses, but getting glasses online is obviously a cheaper option. I was really pleased when I first put them on. They are very light and I like the new look – subtle specs and no bright red rash!

My New Glasses – Wow!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’m really excited with the new prescription glasses I got this week, the world is a different place!! I’ve worn glasses for ten years, and I’ve gradually got braver with the design of my eyeglass frames since the first pair.

When I first needed prescription spectacles I started out with rimless frames because I thought they were more inconspicuous, but I kept putting them down and breaking them. I moved onto metal designer frames, but then I discovered my online optician and decided to get something exciting, and buy glasses online. So I got my new Christian Dior frames – when the Postman arrived with them I was desperate to get the box open!

They are a beautiful blueberry coloured plastic with fabulous sparkles in the side arms, everyone has commented on how gorgeous they are. I don’t wear much jewellery and I feel I don’t need to now, my glasses do all the work for me! My girlfriends all want to know where I got them.

The good news is that not only can I see, but this little slice of Designer heaven was way cheaper than buying a Dior handbag. I love them and I can’t imagine going back to boring old glasses.

If anyone out there is nervous of trying something different then take it from me – boys do make passes if you have the right glasses! (But that’s another story!!)
