In Recovery

Monday, June 14th, 2010

With our new Government finding their feet and stores such as Boots recording record profits, it would seem that we’re making tentative steps towards believing in a recovery. Are we seeing signs of this in the Optical market, and is it affecting what we sell?

Several big names have sounded optimistic about their prospects through 2010, all backed up by their sales records for the first quarter of the year. One of the world’s biggest luxury frame manufacturers reported a return to normal sales figures for 2010, with signs of growth for the upcoming months. Ultralase, who perform Laser surgery for vision correction were 25% up on consultation bookings at the beginning of the year, and obviously these are two key areas where luxuries, not necessities are showing marked signs of improvement.

Last year manufacturers were being cautious about new product, scaling down new collections and showing a more austere approach to design. Ostentatious bling was replaced by more subtle styles, and there was a retro feel to many new styles which hinted at a return to classics that would stand the test of time. Disposable, faddy fashion was gone, in favor of styles that would stick around.

Designer fashion held back a little too, with showy logos replaced by discreet styling and detail. To be taken seriously in the workplace clients wanted smart specs with a grown up attitude. Some even ordered frames with no power lenses to add to their studious image! Some contact lens patients switched back to specs in an effort to lower costs.

So as 2010 progresses, we see some of these changes going into reverse as we go into recovery. The High Street shopper is gradually losing their caution and sales of sunnies, contact lenses, and luxury brands are on the increase. Despite news of Government cuts and the cloud of the deficit hanging over us, we’re gradually returning to our shopping habits within the Optical sector.

Sun Style 2010

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Even if the temperature is still zero, we’re all looking forward to when Spring arrives. Now is a great time to be thinking about sunnies, while you have time to browse and get your order in before the busy season starts. So dust off  last season’s sunglasses and take a look, before you move on to the first summer of the new decade.

The recession has had an impact on design this year, and two trends seem to be emerging. For the classic dresser there are the very wearable, simple styles that are an investment for future seasons. For the trend setters amongst you who want to celebrate the first tentative steps towards the economic recovery there are the fashion forward, highly funky shapes.

Sizes are still big, a trend that’s stayed from last season. With sunnies this is a practical fashion, as large frames cut out more glare and UV. Visor styles, where the two lenses form a shield are appearing again, as are rimless mounts with gaps between the lenses and the frame. Retro cat’s eyes are always in vogue, and are a flattering shape for lots of women.

Colour is everywhere, but if you fall into the camp of classic dresser, there is still plenty of black and tortoiseshell. You can go for one with a brighter colour laminated on the back of the rim if you fancy an understated flash of colour. If you want obvious colour them you might want to wait until summer clothes are on the racks, and then choose a frame that will tone with your new season wardrobe. Red and strong green are taking centre stage this year, a refreshing change from the berry tones of 2009.

Small amounts of bling is still in evidence, and the subtle logos of last years credit crunch style are being replaced by more conspicuous displays of your designer’s name. Simply stamped names are being woven into floral or more embellished logos this year, to refresh the look, so don’t think you can get away with digging out last year’s sunnies – splash the cash and cut a dash!

History Repeating Itself?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

With the tragic loss of Michael Jackson, nostalgia for his eighties heyday has been in the news this week. An interesting aspect of eyewear is the way it mirrors fashion and the look of the times but in a relatively subtle way. More people are likely to wear an eighties revival pair of sunnies or glasses then a military suit or a single sequined glove around town!

So how do you catch the look of the moment? With sunglasses it’s easy, as Aviators and huge round frames for girls have been in and out of fashion ever since they were invented. Everyone from Tom Cruise to Prince Harry wears them, and they’re an investment that will serve you well. For girls, ever since Audrey Hepburn peeped over the top of her huge black sunnies in Breakfast at Tiffanys, the look has barely changed. Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Madonna has their variation on the look, but if you want true eighties style make them as big as possible.

Ophthalmic glasses are a different matter, as eighties fashion is hardly anyone’s first choice of a good look! Women had huge frames with very dodgy tints, men had John Lennon round frames or their seventies throw back aviators. We’ve all been enjoying the lightweight joys of small frames for some time now, and most people would not want to go back to heavy, slipping, enormous specs. Second time around however, lenses are lighter, frame materials are thinner and more comfortable too, and frames are gradually getting bigger without the discomfort we suffered before.

So while you’ve got you’ve records back out and your white socks, remember Michael in his heyday, slip on your sunnies or your big specs, and be as Bad as you like!

Keep It Personal!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

As passionate believers in the power of eyewear, we think your total look should start with the specs and then work out from there! Always remember that your glasses frame is the first thing people will see when they look at your face, so let’s have a think about the all important wardrobe personality of your frames…..

Are you a hippy chick? Are you embracing the ditsy floral trend or clinging to the last remnants of boho chic? Sienna Miller spring to mind? Then you need to think soft, girly and feminine with your eyewear. Look for warm plastics in your favourite colour, with a sprinkling of delicate pattern. While outright bling may not be for you, little touches of detail or a subtle flower motif will be the finishing touch to your look.

Favour power suits and are excited about the return of the shoulder pad? Then your groomed, classic style will need to be enhanced by something smart and classy. We’re thinking Kate Silverton – grown up, not too wild, suitable for the board room. A metal in a neutral shade will be good, or the clean lines of a semi rimless. The detail here will be in etched stripes, neat trims, or maybe a contrasting, but not clashing colour.

If you would still love a dressing up box, and half your outfits are more like costumes, then you love the dramatic, the bold, the eclectic. (Lady GaGa we might just be thinking of you!) Your eyewear should be equally different, so think bright, think strong, eye catching and a little crazy. Balance strong colours in clothes with your frames, go for chunky plastic and a much bling as you can fit on.

Sporty girls with their long lithe limbs and gym fetish, need to soften any masculine sportswear with a sleek frame that’s lightweight and aerodynamic. Madonna even wears her sunnies with her gym gear – but that’s the price of celebrity! You can still choose a woman’s frame by going for a warm colour – although red or pink may bring attention to your flushed cheeks! Again, neat details like engraving or bevelled rims will add style but not too much glamour.

Any super achieving multi-taskers amongst us may switch from one personality to another through the course of a day! Change your specs accordingly and have fun  – visit the online optician to hunt for some new looks!

What Type of Leading Man are you?

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Obviously here we all love our glasses, whether for work, play, the beach or the office. We are aware though that some of you might not be convinced yet, so if you’re a guy who still thinks that specs aren’t sexy, then let’s take a look at some leading men who might just inspire you to love your lenses and embrace the joy of spex…..

If you’re the strong silent type, then think Men in Black – remember the cool style of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in their RayBan Wayfarers. (Do not at this point conjure up the Blue’s Brothers – not quite the image we’re going for here!) Or for the more dramatic among you, The Matrix – Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne in their uber funky, lightweight shades.

For that true retro look think of Tom Cruise, the ultimate Top Gun, in the ever classic Aviator. He was still rocking those sunnies in Mission impossible, astride his motorbike. Iconic specs that defined a look as well as an entire era. Although – you could say the same about Austin Powers – but we’ll gloss over that one!

Of course it’s not just sunnies that star in the movies, just ask yourself, where would Superman be without the brilliant disguise of his geek glasses? Would you recognise Michael Caine without his version of the same? For the red carpet or on set, the movies love specs, so embrace your inner screen God and order your own slice of star style!
