Thursday, February 25th, 2010

With Lady Gaga wiping the board at the Brits and the film world awash with Oscar and Bafta talk, our thoughts turn to a review of who we would give IGC Gongs to, if we had the chance to devote ourselves to such a spectacle…..

Award for Stunning Sunglass Wear – It has to be the great Victoria Beckham, with as many pairs of sunnies as she has Birkins. We love Victoria and her endless hunger for fashion, never afraid to change her look and what she looks through….

Get your Groove On!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Making your glasses for you is not as simple as just popping slivers of plastic into your frame and sending it off to you. The perfect pair of glasses blends our expertise with your needs to give you specs which are comfortable, visually correct, and look great too. For the majority of powers putting your glasses together is very straightforward, but if you have a more complicated prescription then some combinations of lens and frame may cause difficulties. Let’s take a look at how they are constructed and what this may mean to you

The vast majority of frames have a rim which tightly holds the lens in place as the lens sits within a groove in the frame rim. With plastic frames we heat the frame which then expands so the lens can be snapped into place. It then shrinks back as it cools to keep the lens in place. Metal frames come apart with a tiny joint at the edge, and we then screw it back up to make it secure. If you are very short sighted then plastic frames may conceal your lenses more than a thin metal rim, and will give the lens edges some protection.

Semi-rimless frames have a nylon cord which sits in a groove around the lens edge. This makes the frame light and flexible, but if you are very long sighted and your lens edges are thin then they may chip easily. If you were to put pressure on the frame – sit on it for example! A lens may pop out, but will easily fit back in. If you’re very short sighted then your thick lens edges may be very visible as there is no frame to disguise it.

Rimless mounts hold lenses in place without them fitting into a rim, but we have to drill through the lenses and then hold them in place with screws or glued bolts. This makes the specs light but very vulnerable to damage, and they are not suitable for high powers whether you are long or short sighted.

If your prescription is strong them you may need to confirm your choice with your optician – we will always advise you if we feel your frame choice does not match your lens power.

As Time Goes By……..

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

As well as the usual aches and pains we expect from middle age onwards, our eyes gradually start to cause a few problems too. The most common complaint is presbyopia, causing us to find small print increasingly hard to see from the mid-forties. This is simply corrected with reading glasses, which you can pick up cheaply from the online optician such as The Internet Glasses Company. Ready reading glasses are useful to quickly glance at things, but for concentrated periods of wear most patients need their full and correctly made up prescription.

As time goes on it’s not just the size of print that causes difficulty. The contrast of coloured lettering on coloured paper, particularly if written in fancy fonts, can be hard to read comfortably. Patients often return to the optician because they struggle with reading, but the light they use to read by can be the culprit. Often a reading lamp will help, experiment with the height and angle to give a good spread of light that doesn’t cause eye strain by creating strong glare.

If cataracts start to form then this can interfere with your vision by altering your colour perception, as well as decreasing your standard of vision. The cataract cannot be operated on until it is ready, so keep up to date with your eye exams and make sure your glasses are as good as they can possibly be. Have them updated even for a small change, as it may make a big difference to your daily life.

As time goes by reading glasses may not be enough for some elderly patients with serious deterioration in their vision. They may need to move on to more complex solutions such as low vision aids, specifically tailored for different eye conditions. Always go back to your optician if sight deteriorates, as they can refer you to different specialists who can provide further help.

I’m Dreaming of a Glittery Christmas!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Excitement levels are at fever pitch in our office this week, with party season about to commence and the choccie advent calendars temptingly ready to go. As a confirmed speccy four eyes, since my teens, I’m always on the look out to expand my eyewear options. I do have contact lenses too, but I really like my glasses, so I set out last month to enhance my Christmas look with something a bit different….

Over the years I’ve had lots of glasses frames, from sporty Oakley to big flash Roberto Cavalli sunglasses. I loved them all and they always remind me of stuff I’ve done etc, but I’ve never had a pair of dressing up going out specs. I was flicking through Grazia magazine and checking out the ideas for Christmas jewellery etc when I suddenly thought about a real original accessory – sparkly bling specs!

I got online and had a good hunt through. There are loads about, gorgeous hot colours and funky details, and my Mum said I could have them for Christmas – there was no stopping me! I really liked one site, and mailed them because they send you the specs to try at home. Check them out – the www.theinternetglassescompany.co.uk I also told them about a frame I’d seen in an opticians, you never know until you ask!

They sent me the frames I like off their site, and ordered my dream frame in for me. (Ok, so I kind of got two pairs – but they’re a medical necessity -right?!) I settled on a Christian Dior with a beautiful jewel flower on the sides. These are my bit grown up, very dressy pair. The dream frame is Oscar and Fitch – they have a way cool website and loads of styles. Those glasses are black with metal hoops for sides and little sparkly diamonds, these are my out with the girls more fun pair. I love them both and am now ready to party through the New Year!

P.S. The Internet Glasses Company were impressed by Oscar and Fitch and will be stocking them soon – just shows what a good shopper I am!!
